S.A.F.E. Light Pattern

I was recently reading a Federal Signal Aerotwinsonic lightbar ad where it talked about the bar having the very effective S.A.F.E. light pattern. What does the acronym S.A.F.E. stand for?

IIRC synchronized automated flash effect.
You sure it was an Aerotwinsonic ad and not the Aerodynic ad, it was the outboard to inboard sweep flash pattern unique to the 4/6/8/10 geared-rotator with & without end lamp Aerodynic lightbars.

You are correct it was an Aerodynic and not at Aerotwinsonic. I got mixed up because this version of the wrecker lightbar has the sealed beam rotators and cascade mirrors and I incorrectly associated that type of rotator with the Aerotwinsonic.

When the TwinSonic first came out, FedSig called it the "hand clap" light pattern using the anodized aluminum mirrors to reflect the sealed beam light "generally forward". Same would apply to the Aero TwinSonic and this wrecker version, which they identify as a SAFE pattern ("...using the time-rested TwinSonic mechanism..."). Don't know if the split mirrors (reflecting front and rear) would also be considered SAFE.

The wrecker bar pictured above appears to have independent rotators so I would dispute FedSigs' assertion that it produces a true synchronized pattern; with the cascade mirrors individually- yes, combined- no.

RWL bars were the sealed beam (Aerotwin) versions of the wrecker bars.
RWLI bars were the same except they had the independent rotators.

I just found an unusual Aerodynic Wrecker bar, a model 25 -2Z factory original. It features six geared rotators in the middle with flashing ends and work lights.

Thanks for all the great information. I had no idea the Aerodynic lightbar could have such a variety of programable flash patterns.

I see in the bottom left of this add a model that appears to have both a sealed beam rotator on one side and two halogen rotators on the other side. I've never seen one of those before. Are those pretty rare?
You have seen wrong. There are reflector rotators on both sides. They must be positioned that way to give the alternating pattern 1-3-2-4 instead of 1&4-2&3.

Those are definitely sealed beam rotators ala let model 14 par36 frames although the slow shutter speed blurs the pass. side, the driver's side is a bit easier to identify through the clear lens. The sync chains would be shorter but still the TwinSonic/Aero TwinSonic mechanism.
