I don't think the PA1000 was available in 1973, but it is possible that some of CHPs 1973 Polaras had their PA20As replaced with PA1000s in 1974 or later.

This 73 was originally restored by a CHP officer as a Retrofit car(to be a duplicate of his when he started), meaning it was set up originally with the normal rear deck lights, mechanical siren and drivers side red spot. It then was equipped with Twinsonic CTS with speaker, and PA1000. 1973/74 is the beginning of the wide spread use of light bars by the CHP.

Another thing to consider is that CHP Motortransport may have vehicles on the lot for upwards to a couple of years before they even saw service. For example my 1991 Crown Vic CHP had an in service date somewhere around 10-92.

This belonged to a PD my dad worked for as a LEO for 25 years here in Northern, NJ. Circa 1970's.

Here are a couple more from my dad's PD. I was told they are '72 Crown Vics, 427 CI. The pictures are before they got decals. All they had back then was the town seal on the door with "POLICE" on the bottom, and the car number on the front quarter panel.

Vehicle with the TwinSonic is a 1971 Ford LTD, odds are it had a 429 engine with a 4 barrel carburetor. The vehicle with the Twin Beacon Ray is a 1972 Ford LTD, it could have been equipped with either the 429 or the new for 1972 four barrel carburetor 460. The last year the 427 was available in passenger sedans was 1967, the 428 was last offered in 1970.

I love those classic cars!

Here are a couple of vintage Pierce County Sheriff cars from back in the day. The old green and white is a 1970 Plymouth. I still remember these being driven well in to the early 80's. The other car is a 1988 Caprice with an all blue FS Aerodynic. The Plymouth is not mine unfortuantely!!

I beg to differ slightly with your observation, but aren't those Galaxy 500s (which were basic barebones LTDs)?

Yeah, they could be Galaxie 500's. It's hard to be 100% certain without closer shots of the grills.

Love that Caprice. Simple, but very nice.

These Caprices were great cars indeed I believe this one is either an 88' or 89' due to the fact the shoulder belt is not mounted further forward on the door itself. I think they'd give the CVPI's a run for their money. These things were definitely beasts!!

caprice with a 350 in it would do a bit more than give a vic a run for its money.

All this talk about 350s & 351s, how about a Gremlin with a 427? This little monster is still in service with my department although mostly used for parades nowadays.

Not really, I am 6ft & when given the opportunity to take it for a spin I declined after squeezing myself into it. I was stunned to find it not as spacious as an Engine

The only thing I've EVER heard about AMCs is that they are just total junk.

Depends upon the year, the early AMC's were pretty good cars, those built in the very late 70's and early 80's, when Renault was the major share holder and AMC was on the verge of bankruptcy, were not as good. AMC was never a big company and their body styles were often radical departures from contemporary designs. This made AMC stand out, but did not seem to improve their market share. Their drive trains were usually an amalgamation of AMC designed engines with accessory systems, transmissions and axles made by suppliers that made parts for Ford, GM and Chrysler.

One of my high school classmates had an AMC Rambler, I think it was a 1968. It was well worn and tired when he bought it, but it was reliable, at least until the day he put the transmission in "park" and floored the gas pedal. He wanted to see what the old engine would do. He proved that a connecting rod can break and sometimes has enough force to crack a cylinder block. Like Forrest Gump said, "stupid is as stupid does". :hopeless:

I remember back in the '70s seeing an LASD Hornet radio car...black and white, with a red/red CTS.
