WOODBURY, N.Y. -- We continue to follow a fatal accident in Orange County. A 15 passenger church van crashed on the Thruway in Woodbury around 3 p.m. Saturday.

State Police say 14 adults were in the van at the time of the crash and several were ejected. Six people were killed and eight others were injured.

Of the survivors, four were flown to Westchester Medical Center and the other four were taken to area hospitals.

"We believe there may have been a tire failure, one of the rear tires blew out. The vehicle went off the road and ended up rolling over,” said Maj. Robert Meyers.

The van is registered to a church group from Westchester County, but it's unclear which group. Northbound lanes between exits 16 and 17 were closed for several hours following the crash.

What a sad way to go. At least they will be going to the right place. My thoughts and prayers go out to them and their families. I hope the ones that did survive make a speedy recovery.

Seatbelts seatbelts seatbelts!

There used to be alot of those roll overs with the 15 pass vans from all 3. We just had one south of Dallas that killed 5. No one is ever wearing their seatbelts. It is a law in texas now that every person in a vehicle has to wear a seatbelt, and that a driver cannot have more passnegers than there are seat belts for.

sad that people have to die from a car crash becasue they wont wear seatbelts.

That whole general area of thruway is a death trap. For whatever reason there's been so many fatal accidents there as far as I can remember. Part of the reason why I don't drive that way anymore.
