Southern Vehicle Products lightbar. 1982

I spent today restoring this old SVP bar that I just got on ebay.

It is from 1982, or thereabouts. Both motors are dated 1-22-82.

I didn't even know what I was buying. The picture was awful ( I should talk, with my crappy camera-phone :duh: ). But for a winning bid of $26.00, and $30.00 to ship it, I was willing to gamble that it would be kind of unique.

I had never seen one with rounded domes, and a squared off, Twinsonic-like speaker cover. It looked like a cross between a Signal-Stat Dual Comm & a Twinsonic.

Motorolamaniac told me that it looked like an old SVP, and he was right.

Here is the inside, all cleaned up and working great. The flasher is a Kay-Lab model 12-S. The same flasher we use on our brushbreakers for the 7" warning lights (school bus lights)

Next week I will try to get to wet sanding & buffing the two red lenses. They are in tough shape, with some deep scratches. It looks like somebody tried to spray paint one of them blue.

This is funny...They raised the fixed flasher assemblies up by using PVC pipe, and threaded rod.

I put the domes and the plastic speaker cover back on it this morning for a few photos.

A couple of the speaker grill slats were broken, but not missing any pieces, so I was able to gently flex them back into place. I will super glue them after I restore the cover.

This was because the shipper had the mounting feet taped to the front of the grill.

There are a few minor chips missing from the bottom of the grill, one of the domes, and one of the endcaps.

Notice the blue paint on the top of the red dome.

I don't know where this bar was in service, but it came from Union City, PA. just north of RT-80 near the PA-Ohio border.

I would like to find a blue dome for it...hint, hint. ;)

I had one of those a few months back. I was surprised at all the plastic used on it; it sure didn't weigh much.

This is the better of the 2 pics I can find of it right now (from facebook):

SVP Lightbar

Only problem is the lower endcaps were gone & I have no idea where I'd find them...

Great find there, Bob. I wished I could helped transport her for ya during the trip to OH. Seems like you got a good deal in shipping anyway.

I don't know if bluelightandabat on the board here still has it, but he had a set of domes (red and blue), grille and frame for sale.

That blue paint on top of one of the domes may be the result of someone attempting to paint it to have a red/blue cosmetic effect and fortunately changing his mind when he saw it wouldn't work.

At least they stopped before ruining the whole dome. Cool find.
