DLX6 available here for $79.99: *****************.com - SVP VersaStar DLX6 LED
These were demoed from Star Warning Systems by Jared @ ***************** (here on ELB). I've purchased from Jared before. These were provided under a temporary demo agreement with the expectation of either returning or purchasing them. At this point, I am planning on purchasing at least one pair.
My observations:
This light is extremely compact (Dimensions: 1” H x 3-5/8” W x 1 5/16" D). It has a very narrow beam width. The units I reviewed had the standard lenses. (I just received a set of alternate-optic lenses, which I haven't had time to review as of 4/13/12)
It's got a great punch straight-on and is reasonably noticeable from the sides, but not nearly as much punch once you get past 30-40 degrees or so off of center.
The provided mounting bracket kit lets you adjust the angle of the light up and down from 10 about degrees below level to about 30 degrees above level with the included 90-degree bracket (roughly an L-bracket).
It also includes bracket pieces for hood/lip mounting (as well as a rubber pad to protect the paint).
The DLX6 is not surface-mountable (there is just under 3/4" of heat sink on the back). The DLX4, however, is (supposed to be) surface mountable.
Flashback hoods are available for interior mounting.
20 flash patterns are included plus steady burn. The DLX6 has a neat feature, which is the ability to jump to pattern 1, 6, 11, or 16 by holding down the pattern select wire until the light flashes 1-4 times.
Ratings:
Straight-on-angle viewing: 9/10
side-angle viewing: 5/10
included mounting hardware: 8/10 for efforts at providing brackets and options (90-degree bracket as well as lip-mount), 6/10 on execution. The light comes with different sizes of screws, and it's not immediately obvious which screws go through the bracket into the back of the light, and which are meant to secure the lip-mount bracket. The lip-mount bracket seems a bit complex to me.
documentation: 7/10. The install guide covers 3 different models of light, so it has more info to sort through to find exactly what you are looking for. Instructions on setting flash patterns, solid/split options, steady burn, etc... are fairly easy to understand.
Overall score(as a directional grille/deck light): 8/10
Conclusions:
This light is perfectly suited for grille or deck mounting. It is well worth consideration where a flat surface or an edge similar to a hood exists. It would also do well on a license plate bracket (available from Star).
It would be very appropriate for side-of-push-bumper intersection warning, but you would have to acquire a different bracket (several are available) for a more appropriate mounting solution.
I am now planning to acquire a set for myself.
I’m planning to get a flash-pattern video, however I am going to have to find a working video camera first.
Brackets:
Light throw is shown from approx. 10' from my garage door. Photos were taken from approximately the same distance from the door and a few feet to the right.
I also took photos of the light spread from an SOS Ghost and FedSig Impaxx IPX630 originating from the same location.
Light throw of DLX6. More intense than either the Ghost or IPX630, but not nearly as wide as either of the other two.
