Put positive & negative power to them (12 VDC). If they light up brightly; they are passive.


If they are very dim or don't come on at all, they are ballast.


I've had TIR6's before that said ballast on them but they worked with positive & negative power.

I was under the impression that the only ballast powered 500 series were LIN8s and that all TIR6 and LIN6s were passive. But I could be wrong.
