It’s common knowledge that lightbar manufacturers combined rotating lights with other lights that served as flashers, alley lights and takedown lights. I often wondered if back when beacons were more common, if they considered somehow incorporating these secondary lights into their beacons. I have seen some Federal Signal model 17 beacons with a red stationary light attached to the front skirt to make it California compliant. I know Whelen made the 5200 PA-GL, 5300T or Darth Vader light that had a speaker and 2 takedown lights incorporated into it’s base. Other than these two lights, I haven’t seen any other manufacturers incorporate additional lighting to their beacons.
Awhile back I had two different Tri Lite beacons and some spare lights and decided to get creative.
The first set of photos is of a self contained strobe beacon with two red motorcycle turn signal lights attached to each side of the base, facing forward. Two small, chrome takedown lights were attached to the front of the base and a third chrome light with an amber lens was attached to the rear of the base. With a small flasher installed in the base of the beacon, the two red lights alternately flash with the two clear takedown lights to the front. The Amber light flashes to the rear.
My second attempt was a Tri Lite rotating beacon with dual sealed beams. I found a pair of double sided turn signal type lights that had blue lenses on one side and amber on the other. I mounted the turn signal lights to each side of the base of the beacon with the blue lenses facing forward and the amber lenses facing the rear. A flasher for those lights was installed in the base of the beacon.
I took pictures of the beacons with both red and blue domes on top.
If you know of other beacons with additional lighting features built into the bases, feel free to add them to this post.
