STOW, Ohio —
Stow police have released cruiser dashcam video which shows a wild, 52-mile pursuit of a stolen dump truck.

Officials said a teen driver was behind the wheel of the truck, which can be seen barreling into police and civilian cars in the video.

It started early Saturday morning when a resident reported his 1996 Mack dump truck missing.

The truck owner's son later spotted his father's vehicle in the area of Fishcreek Road in Stow.

Officers responded and tried to stop the stolen dump truck, but officials said the 17-year-old driver had other plans.

According to police, the teen driver intentionally rammed two police cruisers and attempted to drive over another.

A witness told Fox 8 News the scene was almost unreal. "I thought it was a movie being filmed. There was a red dump truck coming about 50 miles an hour in reverse. It went right through both police cars, knocked the police cars out of the way, hit four more cars...it was throwing these cars...it was unbelievable," said Bill Horrigan.

The driver continued fleeing through Stow and southbound on State Route 8.

"He took on the police, and he damaged several civilian vehicles. He attempted on Route 8 to strike civilian and police vehicles. Obviously, a very dangerous behavior when you're driving a dump truck," Lt. Ann Stirm of Stow police said.

Finally, after a 52.5 mile pursuit through several counties, the teen purposefully drove into a guardrail on Columbia Road, just east of I-77 near Strasburg.

He was taken into custody around 12:30 p.m. Saturday and faces numerous charges.

Multiple surrounding safety force agencies assisted with the pursuit. Two police officers sustained injuries during the ordeal. Authorities said they were treated and released from area hospitals.

I'm surprised the officers didn't light up the a-hole after that...wow! What a scumsucker that teen is...

I don't understand how he was allowed to drive 52 miles!! Is there no protocol in stopping vehicles?!!

You can't exactly PIT maneuver a dump truck. They did try multiple times to stop stick the truck, and he hit the spikes multiple times. But due to the thickness of many truck tires, the tires were mostly un-effected. They did manage to get the front passenger side flat with the spikes, and he kept on driving until he finally crashed.

Wow. Lucky no one was seriously injured.

For all of you LEOs out there, would the drivers actions been enough to consider the use of deadly force since he was obviously attempting to harm the other officers as well as the public? Also, what else could have been used to attempt to stop the vehicle besides stop sticks?

Maybe some 00 buck to the tires out of the ol' mossberg 500! I think in this situation it would be warranted to use that kinda force to stop a truck!

You think after the kid hit the second cruiser and civilian cars that you'd be hearing gunshots like crazy. I know if I was one of those officers seeing my colleague and innocent civilians getting rammed, I'd be unloading as much ammunition necessary against the driver to stop the threat, not let it continue.

Ok...not to take away from the monstrosity of a dump truck on a rampage...

But seriously, who in their right mind would think that using a Crown Vic (or Explorer for that matter) as a rolling brake would do any good whatsoever???

"Yeah, I'm going to use my 4200lb car to stop a 10,000lb truck! It's fool-proof!"

I work for a neighboring community to Stow, we were actually in Stow getting fuel when this all started. We listened to most of the radio traffic from all the agencies involved. As soon as we got back to our station we got on radioreference.com and just started pulling up the communities down the line.

Several times, units involved in the chase wanted to get in front of it and box it in. Problem is, a crown vic vs a dump truck is not a fair fight. It is that whole rule of lugnuts thing. They were advised not to do it. They spiked the dump truck at least 3 times in the chase down I-77, they also got a couple troopers that were not paying attention or listening to the radio traffic telling them where the spikes were.

It was a very interesting chase to listen to.

53 seconds is when deadly force becomes viable. He begins backing towards the first car. Either put it in reverse and go, or abandon and start shooting as he crashes into the squad. Everything past there is deadly force IMPO. A bunch of .223 or 00 or slugs would work just fine on the driver's door or windshield.

1:09 when the car blocks the road, abandon the car and grab a rifle (if one is available) and begin shooting from high ground as he comes down the road.

As I watch the video I'll just keep adding.

2:24 when the truck stops for about 10 seconds

This is when the first Stow officer was injured, he was trying to exit the vehicle for safety. Minor injuries to his legs from being thrown out

Second officer was injured when his cruiser was thrown in to the pole. He was trying to get a head (or behind if you will) the chase and deploy spike strips.

Stow fire dispatched this call as a squad needed for multiple people injured from being ran over by a dump truck. Like I said earlier, we had just gotten on the highway heading back to our station right around the corner from where this all happened.

I tend to agree with RolnCode3. At which time he has established that he will knowingly crash into the cruisers in his path, lethal force is warranted. My concern would be if I didn't act and another officer or citizen in his path were to be killed or injured.

Supposedly the reason he did all this is he was just kicked out of his father's house. And other problems such as being habitually truant from school, which he was dealing with the courts for.

I think it's funny the dumb** kid drove the truck into the creek at the end. Whether it was caused by him nor having any steering tires left, or if he was just plain stupid enough to due it on purpose.

I'm also glad that none of the officer's were severely hurt and got to at least go home that night.

Agreed. If they don't stop him, they're liable for all the other people on the road in harms way.

This is how Texas DPS would have handled it. They stopped the truck by shooting out the tires and radiator to overheat the engine.

I have no idea why they did not light up that dump truck with an AR-15 or shotgun slugs to the tires and engine, or driver windshield. At what point do you let this continue, after the driver actually kills someone?

That video made me laugh. The music makes it lol. Only in Texas will you see a Trooper with a shotgun standing straight up out of a window of a CVPI :p

I mean I can understand them not shooting at the driver, especially if they knew it was a young teenager or something, but you could still take out the tires or the engine. Though, just because he was young in my opinion wouldn't make him immune from a piece of lead, especially if he was trying to hurt another officer and even more so the public. I'm not a LEO so that is just my opinion. It would be a hard call but the life of one is worth the lives of many.

Stow PD shot and killed an armed man 2 years ago, so they aren't necessarily gun shy. That being said, in the end, they made the right decisions here. A lot of restraint was exercised. They were justified to use lethal force when the teen was ramming cars. Once he got on the highway, he actions changed. You can't pull next to him, say he tried to side swipe you, and open fire-maybe in Texas, but not in Ohio!

I wasn't meaning the side swiping, just the intentional ramming of police vehicles and the public.
