2 Volunteer Firefighters Dead After Explosion

Published: September 15, 2011, 10:06 PM

BRITTON, SD - Two Volunteer firefighters are dead after an explosion.

It happened at the Sunset Hutterite Colony northwest of Britton just before 10 a.m. Thursday morning.

The Marshall County sheriff says the men were on top of large coal bin, putting out the fire when the explosion happened.

The force blew off the roof and a wall from the building landed on top of the men.

The names of the 20-year old and 22-year old fire fighters have not been released.

Unfortunately this was my department. The 2 fallen firefighters where a member of Sunset Colony Fire Department which is basically a subsidary of North Marshall Fire Department (Mine). They have no coverage area but respond with us on all of our calls. They were laid to rest yesterday (Saturday) with overe 1000 people in attendance. I have worked fires with Jacob but none that I recall with William. It is hard time in our small community but the strong faith of the colony members is inspirational.
