Unity RV46 "Hill Light"

A couple of photos of an NYPD car with a Unity RV on the roof popped up in the ID This Light thread.

I did some digging to see if it was a one-off for NYPD and found out that Unity had a tilt-beam beacon in its lineup--RV46R(ed)T, B(lue)T AND A(mber)T. All they had to do was change bulb colors. To achieve the tilt and maintain dome clearance, they used par 36 bulb holders from the 45/25. Don't know if any survived, but I'm looking!

Had to share with my fellow aficionados of vintage gear!

Notice in the brochure how they advertised lower amp draw with the RV26 (2/100watt bulbs vs. 4/100 watt bulbs! Which, I of course had in my 1st beacon!). So what did I do? Added a second RV46 and two spitfire domes. Could see me comin' from miles away! Don't need no stinkin' 'Hill Lights"!

So it was a catalog item and not just a special order or experimental model. I learn something every day.

I read one of the included accessories with the perm mount version was a three way switch. Was this so the rotation could be stopped while the lamps remain lighted? Also, that optional crazy beacon bracket, ...some erector set called, wants its missing parts back.

I assume three way switch was off-on-on so you could activate rotation and red and then add white.

I would assume that's what the switch was for, Dennis. Federal had the same set up with the 175s, where it could be run with only the red bulbs showing, and it could be stopped where the bottom-tilt clear bulb could be used as a takedown.
