I shot a bunch of fire apparatus pics today, and that included a bunch of warning lights (mostly Whelen, but a bit of PowerArc for Dan). The gallery is on Facebook, but I'm not going to post all 78 on here (a lot of them are dups). That being said, here are a few.

Arnold is a wealthy community on the shore. But, as has been said many times before, pretty doesn't put the fire out.

I agree, I'm not sure if it's really practical. Also, it's a rescue squad. :)

Why do some fire trucks have baziilions of dollars worth of stuff on the front bumper, where it might get, um, bumped? Tow hooks, winches and straps make sense, and I understand the hose thingys, but Qs, chrome airhorn trumpets and bunches of lightheads,....... maybe it's all the redneck backwoods ancient VFD and wildland trucks I'm used to seeing, like the one that has it's own jumper cables permanently wrapped around the brushguard.

Great shots Doug. Looks like the new camera's doing pretty well :D With those amount of lights.... and you know how I like my lights... I just see my tax dollars going right out the window... (insert sigh here)....

some really nice trucks and pics there ;) I've gotta move down to Maryland; most of the department rigs i've seen (incl. Price George's & Loudoun) are insane.

(and yes, there's def. some unnecessary extra lighting)

Yeah... but you'll have to give up all your woo-woos if you move here... trade offs with anywhere you move...

I can certainly understand your comment about tax dollars going out the windows. I don't know how many of those pieces are funded with tax dollars (I know that HCFR Tanker 11 is part of a UASI grant), but even if they're used with local and/or state (e.g., 508 money), or even donations, I feel there's an obligation to use the money wisely, especially in this day and age of limited funding.

As to Stendec's comment about the bumper, you do make a good point, as well - things do break. Is it wise to mount expensive, vulnerable equipment in a position that makes it even more vulnerable to breakage? The quandary then becomes, where can you mount it in a way as to protect it, while allowing it do its job?

Finally, Seth, it's actually not a new camera; it's the same SX5IS I've had for a little while now. It does a great job while devouring batteries. :)

Advanced lighting technology (LEDs) and antiquated siren technology (Q2b).

Except for the fact that electronic sirens are useless on highways, and the Q is far better at penetrating today's new soundproof cars. Also, I have had 4 different electronic sirens crap out on our rescue. The same Q has been used for 40 years.

Nice looking trucks. It's not a real fire unit without a Q :D . The Q is by far the best siren on the market.

If that is the case then all emergency vehicles should have mechanical sirens, not just fire engines.

I agree. The distinct sound produced by the Q says "fire department coming through, get out of the way".

Wailer, you would be proud of me. I was talking to one of our rooks last night and almost slapped him. We were standing outside the station and hear a siren in the distance. He looks real confused and says 'Who's got a call?'. 'EMS' I replied and the kid (so what if he's a year older than me?) says 'But why are they using our siren?' Dudes been a cop for 3 months, ran code IDK how many times, had EMS respond to his location many times, yet has never noticed that they have the EXACT same siren we do...

In the 1960s and for part of the 1970s, the distinct sound of the Q meant "fire engine or ambulance coming through".

But this is 2010. Also, yes I think that every emergency vehicle should have a mechanical siren.

Now, for the most part, it means fire apparatus (there are, of course, exceptions - the Pentagon Force Protection's command unit has a Q, and surely other cops want to be firefighters as well...er, law enforcement officials spec such a siren :-D). I don't include the eQ (which sounds like a dying cow) in the same group.

Back on topic... I LOVE those pics. I really like odd and off angle photography like that. Awesome trucks. And yes, one did have an LED Roto-Ray. :geek:

Thanks for the comment. In my travels with photography, I've come to realize that life doesn't happen only at 6'2", and looking at something from a higher, or lower, level can produce unexpectedly pleasant results.

Again, thanks!

I really love those picture you should give us the link to the full size ones. Great photography.

Something also to look at if everything has a Q on it then how possibly are you going to tell the difference between LEO and fire. And also something when Police are going code 3 something really bad is happening oppose to when fire runs code 3 to everything. at least where i live. So i would rather each service have there own type of siren.
