Look for an old Federal Model 28 mechanical siren, but make sure it's the standard pitch version with eight ports in the rotor / stator assembly.

+1.... I got the cheapest carson 200w electronic siren that had mechanical tone and it worked very well. Ran like $160 I think... very happy with the tone too.

There is no other siren that sounds like the Federal Q series. That is the reason that Federal patented the sound. By law, there can be no other siren that sounds the same. Save your pennies and buy the real thing, you won't regret it.

There's and old saying that if you want nice fresh oats, you must pay the price. However, if you can make do with oats that have been through the horse first, well, that comes cheaper.

Well if your looking for the cheapest way.....

Buy the most inexpensive siren you can find with a PA mike. Pucker up your lips and do the best you can through the mic. Hence a "Q like sound".
