Hi,

I’ve seen this for sale near me. I normally prefer rotor light bars so wouldn’t go for this but though it looked kind of cool. Whelen Edge, but probably made under licence by Woodway.

if I got this would I also need a controller to operate it or can it be wired up to any 12v source?

Thanks

There's a small chance it may require a controller. The PCDS-9 is needed for any Diagnostix bar. Do you have access to additional photos, especially of the wiring or of the label?

I took it from the Facebook market place ad. There’s no labels and just this one of the wiring. Think one wire will be for the rescue light, the other control the blues.

Don’t know if that helps?

If there are only two wires in the the small cable coming out of the light bar (and expecially if they're colored blue and gray), I'd assume they are serial communications and given that its an "EDGE", I'd assume it _is_ a diagnostics ("Diagnostix") bar...but I defer to shues here.

I'm not the expert here by any means, having only ever owned one Diagnostix 99 Edge. Perhaps @RyanZ71 still has his and can help out.

For a time, Whelen used the terms Diagnostic and Diagnostix interchangeably for some time. Check this out: https://web.archive.org/web/20000125204847/http://www.whelen.com:80/ltbredia.htm#top

Regardless, I believe Diagnostix predates B-LINK. I think the BL10000 (Edge 10000) were the first bars to require an MPC01, MPC02, or MPC03.

There is a wealth of information available about Whelen serial in all its manifestations, here: https://elightbars.org/forums/threads/whelen-blink-b-link-serial-thread.5914/

The Whelen Diagnostic bars were the predecesor to the B-Link, yup. But- any chance of getting a closer photo of those wires? I can't tell how many are there, do you know for sure it is just 3 or 4 wires? If so, then yes, diagnostic bar. If not, then good old fashioned bar! I've sold my diagnostic bar awhile back and all I have is the classic controller my department used on our 80s vintage edge 9000s which I'll post a photo of. Whelen used several types of controllers for those older types but I think you can make the old ones work without a whelen controller,

the large harness will be the power and ground
if the smaller wire is red/black its a diagnostix bar and needs the controller thats programmed specific to that bars configuration,
it will not be blue and grey for B-Link setup as those weren't made with the standard edge 9000.
if it has 9 smaller wires it will be low current standard trigger wires 12v triggers

Thank you for confirming! It has been years since I sold my PCDS-9 and Diagnostix Edge and I have clearly forgotten much.

Been a bit busy with work and I thought this had been sold, but I seen it popped back up on marketplace again so got it.

The larger cable has black and red, then The smaller one has 9 smaller wires.

Those little colored wires are all trigger wires. Apply 12v to the main harness and the touch the little wires to 12V+. No special controller necessary for that bar.

Thanks Bobcat.

it’s been sat up for a long time so I need to spend a bit of time cleaning up the connections and bulb holders.

It was mounted on the front of a Land Rover as there are 4x corner strobes and 4x front facing strobes, but nothing rear facing. The “RESCUE” sign has 2x standard bulbs to light it up too

Are the 9x trigger wires for each strobe or different flash patterns? Or would that depend on the model?

Not sure if anyone else is interested, but from what the guy I bought it off told me I think I found a picture of it on its original vehicle. The grill has now been painted black but you can see the silver surround on the “intersectors” and yellow paint on the grill underneath

The trigger wires control different functions of the bar, one may be for patterns, one for the corner strobes, one for the sign, one for the front strobes, etc. That Land Rover is cool too, always fun to find out what a lightbar was originally mounted to.
