I have been seeing the B&W on the news allot lately and one time you could see a green flashing LED light reflecting off stuff/people. Plus the cruise lights being on instead of the flashing lights.

Seems that Dallas has 100+ B&W Dodge Chargers waiting to be put on the streets. Saw this today when I was at their main maintenance facility. Always cool to see a fleet of cop cars lined up like this. If you look close enough one of the Chargers has alloy wheels, all the others are steel. Do not know if that is a special unit, or it was just ordered wrong. Maybe it is one of the replacement for their previous Camaro traffic units and will be clean top and wanted alloy wheels.

These are all 2010 models from what I saw, but they were behind a fence and could not get any closer. Dallas would likely buy the V6 as this is what they did with the Caprice when they offered the LT1. There were I think 1994 LT1 Caprices in Dallas, but all the ones I have ever seen at auction were the small V8. You would likely only see a few Hemi for traffic units that may have replaced the Camaros they sold in 2010. Maybe that one with the alloy wheels in the far background would be a Hemi with the traffic unit, but this is just an guess.

Dallas will buy a large fleet of cars at one time and slowly build and place them in service. It is not uncommon to see a car sit for almost a year before it is put in service. Generally the first number in the unit is the model year, but I have seen it a year later in some cases.

All Dallas chargers are v6. Dallas won't get hemis. the 1994 Caprice was the only Caprice with the big engine, and there are maybe 4 left in marked service that I have found. 1994 was the only time in recent history the city bought from the state contract. The charger purchase is said to be an exclusive contract for marked cars for 5 years, with 2011 being left out, so 2008-2010 and then 2012 and 2013 will be Chargers. This was done for a very deep discount, which Chrysler has been pushing nation wide to keep the production numbers up. The first digit in the 4 digit sequence is the model year of the vehicle, the next 3 are the order the vehicle is added to the system. That is city wide as the PD does not own the car. So you can find an Impala followed by a Honda Civic followed by a Garbage truck and back to an Impala in streets. So all the charger's you see with an 8 are 2008's. When the first 2007 Chargers were sent to stations in late 2008, they sat for another 6 months before anyone could drive them. Most cars had to have new batteries, and more than a few needed new tires. It finally came to light that they were loosing a year of warranty, so they are pushing the cars onto the street as quick as they can. For the first time in 2 decades, the city is out sourcing upfitting on the cars for lights, and equipment, while keeping video, radios and computer installs in house. They used to handle everything in house.

Taken in december of 2010, note these are 2010's as the first digit is 0

HILO, nice pics and good info. Why was 2011 left out of the contract? What will DPD pick up instead?

There will be 2011 Charger's after all. There will not be ANY new patrol cars purchased dring the 2011 fiscal budget. All the 2010's were bought and paid for in 2010 budget, and the 2011's wil be bought from the 2012 budget at the end of the 2011 model year.

All equipment except radio, computer, camera, and radars (if equipped), are installed by an upfitter for Dallas Dodge. Not all 2010 cars have barriers or cameras. John Wright and ass'es are only putting the decals on. This explaines the cars with no push bumpers or lightbars in K9's pictures. So the cars come from Dallas Dodge, to Arlington (30 miles) for decals, to make ready to que, back to Dallas Dodge and to the upfitter (50 miles the other direction, back to Dallas Dodge and then back to the make ready in que and finally to the radio shop for radios and computers. This is mostly done by flat bed wrecker, two at a time. This is also why it is almost a year before a new car goes into rotation. Smart these bids are...

Also, and I am sure this is common in alot of major cities, Dallas Police does not own the majority of the police vehicles. The City of Dallas ownes the vehicles, and they lease them to the PD, streets, sanitation, parks ect. the PD pays the city garage for maintenece and repaires, with an oil change costing over $100.00. The Fire Department does own most of their vehicles.

It doesn't actually have alloy wheels. They are hub caps although strange it is the only car with them instead of the chrome centers. And definitely not a Hemi.

Anyone ever notice that some of the rear warning lights in the rear windows on some of the DPD cars are suction cupped on?

Yep. Two single Avengers are mounted with suction cups in 2008 Chargers. 2009 and up are basically taped to the rear deck. In nearly all cars, the Avengers are not synced.

The 2000 Explorer's are assigned to traffic, which also has a couple of new Tahoe's for the commercial vehicle squad.
