Cop, suspect killed in Springfield domestic standoff - BostonHerald.com

Springfield Police Commissioner William Fitchet said the gunman killed Officer Kevin Ambrose — a 36-year veteran of the force — and shot Charlene Mitchell, 29, in the Lawton Arms apartment complex.

Officer Ambrose responded to reports of a Restraining Order violation.


He arrived on scene to find a female party, Charlene Mitchell in the parking lot with her estranged boyfriend Shawn Bryan a State of NY Correction's Officer.


Bryan was there on a court order to retrieve items from her apartment. There was a verbal altercation in the parking lot and that's when Mitchell called to report Bryan was there in violation.


Officer Ambrose escorted the two parties upstairs to the apartment and when they got there, Bryan shoved Mitchell into the apartment and shut the door on Officer Ambrose, leaving him in the hall.


Officer Ambrose attempted to break down the door to gain entry. Shawn Bryan shot through the door striking Officer Ambrose once. Bryan opened the door and shot Ambrose a second time.


Bryan shot Mitchell in the apartment and then walked out to his car where he shot himself in the chest.


Officer Ambrose was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.


The scumbag died of his self-inflicted wound.


Mitchell is still listed in critical condition.


Officer Ambrose had 36 years on the job, and was a police cadet for 2 years before that. He is survived by his wife, two children, and one granddaughter.

Here is the wake, funeral and donation information:

The wake and funeral arrangements for Springfield Police Officer Kevin Ambrose, killed in the line of duty, are being conducted by Sampson Family Chapels.

Wake: The wake will be held on Thursday from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Road.


Funeral: The funeral will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine of Sienna Church on Parker Street.


Officer Ambrose will then be laid to rest at the Hillcrest Park Cemetery on Parker Street.

Officer Ambrose was brought to Boston this morning for the autopsy and returned home to his city this evening.


Officers (in their cruisers) from Springfield PD and Mass State Police escorted him on both legs of his journey, and stood vigil in Boston as the autopsy was performed.

It sounds like there was no altercation initially that Officer Ambrose responded to.


The restraining order was issued less than an hour before in the local court. Officer Ambrose met both parties involved at their apartment to oversee Bryan retrieving his television.


He walked with them up to the third floor residence and that's when Bryan shoved the female party into the apartment and locked Officer Ambrose out. That's when Bryan opened fire through the door.


It seemed like Bryan's intention all along was to kill his girlfriend and whichever officer was dispatched.


Officer Ambrose turned down promotion time and time again. His original partner is now the Deputy Chief. In Springfield when you get promoted you have to start over on the graveyard shift and build seniority again amongst your rank.


It is said that Ambrose valued his family and having time with them most of all, and thus he stayed a patrol officer for his entire 36 year career. Not having to work an eve or night shift again meant he could spend more time with his family.

Officer Ambrose, Badge #7, was laid to rest today.

Ambrose's police cruiser was at the head of the funeral procession, and his badge number, seven, was memorialized in a flower arrangement of green carnations at the front of the church.

Along with his wife of 30 years, Carla, and his children, Kyle and Krista, 6,000 out-of-town police officers from as far away from Canada came to honor Ambrose, as well as 300 city police officers, 100 retired police and 100 civilian police employees.


Gov. Deval L. Patrick attended the ceremony along with U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal, Mayor Domenic Sarno and a collection of other elected officials.


Endless waves of police in blue uniforms and white gloves lined the route from the funeral home to the church on Parker Street and a nearby cemetery, where Ambrose was finally laid to rest.
