UPDATED 10:33 a.m. ET - The police chief in a New York State town says that four firefighters were shot while responding to a blaze in the town and that two are dead.

Chief Gerald Pickering says "one or more shooters" fired at the firefighters Monday morning. Officials say they had arrived at the scene of the blaze near the Lake Ontario shore around 6 a.m.

Officials say a fire started in one home and spread to two others and a car. Officials say there is no active shooter at the scene.

WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a firefighter has been shot while responding to a fire at a suburban Rochester home.

Officials in the town of Webster tell local media outlets that someone shot at firefighters around 6 a.m. Monday when they arrived at the scene of the blaze just east of Rochester.

A fire official with the West Webster Fire District tells the Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester that the firefighter is listed in satisfactory condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Officials say the house is still burning and the fire has spread to a second home.

A man answering the phone at the fire station says firefighters are unable to battle the blazes because the area still hasn't been secured by police. The man says no other information is being released.

One FF was a friend and former co-worker of mine at the City of Rochester / Monroe County 911 Center. The other was a LT. with the Town of Webster Police Department.

A very, very sad day in the Public Safety Community.

I want everyone to be safe out there.

I am in Rochester now for the holidays...

The community is devistated.

These guys were volunteers and now two families are left without husbands and fathers on Christmas Eve and it wasn't even the fire that got them...

What a fucking senseless act.

Funeral services have been set for the two volunteer West Webster NY firefighters who were fatally shot Christmas Eve.

Mike Chiapperini, 43, and his son’s best friend, Tomasz Kaczowka, 19, were shot to death Monday morning.

Calling hours for both public servants will be held at Webster Schroeder High School, 875 Ridge Road, Webster, from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and from noon to 3 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

The funeral service for Chiapperini, also a 20-year veteran of the Webster Police Department, will be held at the high school at noon Sunday. He will be buried, with honors, in West Webster Cemetery.

A funeral Mass for Kaczowka, a 911 dispatcher and 2011 Webster Thomas High School graduate, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Stanislaus church, 1124 Hudson Ave., Rochester. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester.
