A true "skirt"

No kidding! What the crap happened to that Beacon Ray?

The skirt has cracked due to age and stress. John "sirenman" Dorgan gave an excellent explanation of why chrome plated sirens and beacon skirts have that problem in another post, as it has something to do with the manufacturing process. His explanation about the chrome splitting can be found in the topic "what year is this thing?" originally posted by member carson946 elsewhere in the vintage and collectable discussion thread.

The cracking was caused by the fact that the housing was not annealed during the spinning process, thus causing stress to build up in the metal. The cracks are simply the stress relieving itself causing what are called stress cracks. You can weld them although that is a difficult process, but they will only crack again somewhere else. There is no fix for this problem other than replacing the housing.

Wow! Never actually seen a Beacon Ray skirt suffer stress cracks like that. :shock:
