I currently have about 30 rotary and strobe lights as well as an edge bar and led liberty in my collection. I have several of them hooked up to the RadioShack type power supplies to be able to run at home. my question is now that there are all these led strips for home that are powered by the DC power supplies that look like the ones for laptops, can these be used to power warning lights depending on the amps without any problems. they are very cheap to buy on eBay and take up less space than the big RS powersupplies. I don't want to run them for hours just turn them on once in awhile.

I've tried what you are proposing (as I'm sure others here have as well) and it doesn't work. Yes the supplies are 12vDC bit there's not enough amps/watts.  There are a few threads around here about it as well.

About the only other option I found is take an old PC power supply (usually free) and add upfit it. Google it or check instructables.com on how to do it. I took a 250w one and 8 bucks for some banana jack terminals and it will power a 75w hot shot beacon but not an old XL9000.

I have been using the eBay special power supplies with great results. I have a 30 amp and 3 20amp models. They are no good for radio equipment because they are switching supplies but work great for lights. Leds, halogen, strobe. You can adjust the voltage on them to get that 13.5v brightness or turn it down if your displaying.

The 30amp I has ran 4 rotators and 7 35w halogens simultaneously for limited duties.

Best part is they are relatively cheap.
