Any one on the board here an animal control officer?

what are your basic job duties besides..

animal complaints,

citing for animal cruelty, etc

vicious or rabid animals

and of course scraping the occasional animal off the road?

We have a position currently open for that job in my county and since it pays more i'd be interested in that and since it be a "gubment" job i get benifits my current job doesnt have. Plus im gettin tired of my current company reducing our holidays, no raise in 3 years and other stuff, barely making over minimum wage...

I was an ACO and it's basically what you described except the scrapping dead animal off the road(ODOT or the county crews did that). Our ACO's here are through the Humane Society but are sworn in to enforce the animal laws.

They also investigate complaints, locate strays, and whatever else may come. They do cite for ceartain things but most of them are submitted for charges and what not then left from there.

I always liked it when I did it. So if your interested I would say go for it. :)

The Franklin County Animal Control guys get paid peanuts, like $10-$11/HR. No thanks. They arent even armed, though technically by law they can be but the county wont allow them to be. Double no thanks.

Our Animal Control Officers are members of the Code Enforcement Department. They are unarmed, but sworn "special duty officers" in the city. They write citations (attempting to enforce local/state/federal law), investigate animal abuse, testify in court, pick up strays, and are also required to "put down" animals after they've been in the adoption facility past 60 days... that'd be a pretty rough part of the job, for me.

They have some sweet tranquilizing guns, though.

i went and picked up an app yesterday. your right about the pay. it starts out at $9.25, but that is still $1.15 more an hour than i make plus its stepping stone into a "gubment" job. The lady i talked to didn't really know much about the benefits. I beleive our ACO falls under the SO. I'll look into some more.

My question is does anyone else in the thread have ACO's that can run hot? All we had when I was there were amber lightbars and the ability to "rush" to a call within means but it was always normal traffic. There was one ACO that is a friend of mine who was going to assist a PD officer who was trying to corner a supposed vicious dog and he got in trouble for "speeding" through a school zone.

Animal control here is an extension of the police department, and has units equipped with L&S. First time I saw one running hot, I had to do a double take!

I'm not in the business but animal control trucks are allowed by law to use red lights, but police vehicles use blue or red/blue lights, so I've seen animal control trucks with red, red/blue and blue lights. (So I'd assume they'd be able to use a siren too)

Our ACO's here are part of the PD. They have two Ram trucks with a cage unit in the bed and run red and blues. They're full LEOs, and function as animal detectives so to speak. Actually seems like a pretty cool job. They don't do the euthanasias, but they have shot a few deers that were suffering after being hit. Hmm, I wonder, do they get to take Bambi home? :undecided:

Here in Virginia where I live the ACO's are part of the County Police. They are fully sworn Police Officer's and can make arrest for any crime not just animal stuff. They carry Glock 22's, they had red light and siren until last year, but the code now allows them to act as a Animal Police and have blue lights and siren.
