Business marketing and taking the big leap

I'm just looking at some ideas from some other install companies on how they take their business to the next level... I know it doesn't happen overnight, after three years I'm getting to that point where I can push it to the next level, set up shop, etc.... but I was curious what you were doing to get people in the door or when you knew it was right to push your business to the next step and move out of the workshop, hire employees, etc.

I have a full time job at a fire department and I don't intend to leave it, but the business is growing to the point now where I feel like if I don't do something soon, it will suffer because I won't have enough time to give customers the support they need, especially during the day time when I'm on duty.

Do you cold call police departments? Do you cold call fire departments? Mailings? Trade Shows? Right now I'm having good luck with Twitter and Facebook ads, but I'm always looking for what's worked, and what's failed to see if I can do any better and hopefully miss some of the pitfalls.

So share what's worked for you, and what didn't work... it might not help me specifically, but maybe there are others in the same boat and we can all learn from each other which is what this board is all about.

Thanks in advance!

Matt
