Chevy Trailblazer Asst. Chief Buggy POV

Here’s a relatively simple (and budget-tight) install I did for a local Asst. Chief POV on a 2008 Chevy Trailblazer.

Equipment:

Ecco Vantage LED Lightbar (red with LED takedowns and alleys)

SoundOff Signal Predator LED dash light (red)

SoundOff Signal LED3 grille lights (1 red / 1 white)

Star DLX3 light heads on rear bumper (amber)

Havis Trailblazer vehicle specific console

Gall’s/Code 3 StreetThunder siren (reused)

Gall’s 100watt speaker

Motorola GTX radio (reused)

General Electric radio speaker (reused)

Ecco lightbar controller

Disclaimer: All lighting was purchased by customer and all mounting locations were chosen by customer. The only thing I supplied was the grille lights, toggle switch, and installation supplies. Customer already had the lightbar and rear lights mounted. I recommended adding more lighting to the tail light/rear window area in the rear, adding lighting to the side windows, and also recommended removing the roof rack cross members to make the lightbar more visible to the rear. Also, the console plates don’t line up perfectly because of the old reused siren (which had a bent and misaligned shell) and radio that did not match up perfectly with the Havis brackets. The gap in the rear of the console will be filled in with a 2” filler plate that Havis did not supply with the console, then the mics can be mounted on mic clips. Also, the Ecco controller was mounted upside down because I believe the lightbar originally was set up for rear work lights, not front takedowns, but the customer wanted the alley light controls to match up but did not want to cut the factory lightbar or controller cables/connections, so this was the easiest solution.

Notes:

-          The Havis vehicle specific console requires that you remove the factory console, cut the rear half off, reinstall the front half, then install the new console over top of the existing front half, which took a while, and you lose the rear radio controls and rear HVAC vents, but actually looks pretty good when it’s completed.

-          While I do not like any lightbar specific controller (reminds me of STL or other cheap China crap), the Ecco lightbar itself was actually not bad. I believe you can cut the wiring harness off of the lightbar and wire the features directly to switches or a switchbox/siren controller/etc. but this is what the customer wanted. The red warning lights were bright even in direct sunlight, as well as the takedowns/alleys. I did not get a chance to demo the takedowns and alleys outside after dark however, but I’m sure they are decent.

-          Every connection on the vehicle (except some of the grounds) has heat shrink connectors.

That is not immediately clear to me.

If you're in doubt, you could either feed the terminal block from the middle, or feed it from both ends. Better yet would be a double jumper, one on each side of the terminal block, under the rings terminals or fork terminals.

I kinda agree, I used to always just go directly to the ground stud, but I actually decided to use the terminal strips lately because it almost seems like the norm on here for a lot of the professional installs I've been following. Didn't turn out quite as neat looking as I would have liked, but I don't think it turned out too bad for one of the first beginning-to-end installs I've done other than for myself.

My terminal strip inside my console has individual wire jumpers between each terminal, but had I known about that metal strip of jumper, I probably would have don't it for simplicity's sake.

Don't mind the other wire mess, still an install in progress!

Yeah I've noticed the same thing lately. I can see the point on the power end where someone doesn't want to keep cutting the controller wires shorter or may not want to join multiple powers with one but connector. I just don't get it on the ground side. It is very hard to keep it neat looking.
