CHP PA500 help?

I have an original CHP PA500 that was left in a wrecked car my dad bought from the CHP about 10 years ago. Car was wrecked in 93.

According to the schematics I have, to activate Tap II and Wail, they need 8volts. What do I have to do to be able to put 8v to them?

Also when I have the power to the ign pin with either of the ground pins ungrounded, the speaker makes a weak horn like sound.

Do all PA500's require low voltage to the tones to work?

Thanks in advance!

I "think" you need a CHP control head to work with that. Not sure if there is something else that will work since it was a special build to CHP specs. Someone here will know.

See this link CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL MOBILE RADIO EQUIPMENT 2001

Yeah it's set up through the control head and radio.

I dug out my other CHP PA500, M-CHP2 motor cycle siren. Tried it out and it works fine.

I've devised a plan to take out the internals of the vehicle PA500 and unplug the wires, then slide in the motorcycle siren through the back. I'll keep the "correct" look up front, while having the useful cables going out the back. :D

I'd still like to know how to get 8v so I can try it on the vehicle PA500.

Not sure if this is what you need, but something along this line looks like it might work if it meets the specs you need. I did not check all of the specs. Basically a step down transformer or voltage regulator of some sort will do what you want to do. It's probably similar to what is in the control head to get the required voltage.

DC 12V to 3V 4.2V 5V 6V 7.5V 8V 9V,24V to 12V 13.8V 19V 5A Buck Converter Voltage Regulator

I agree with the other comments.....you need the control head. We had a PA500 on our Type II Ford ambulance, and I didn't like it. Replaced it with an EQ2B siren. I wouldn't worry about the voltage difference. Ours was hooked straight 12-volts and didn't hurt anything. I didn't like the wail, but the Yelp and horn were o.k.

According to the installation manual on Federal's website you need B+ (12 volts) to activate the tones, not 8 volts.

Should be 12V+ , do you have a document showing 8V? I have a stack of old school PA500's and all run 12V+, only have 2 cables, but trying to source pins and the round connector. Will be taking them to the police car show in OCT.
