We have two Code 3 model 550 beacons on the back of our tanker, they are high-speed models. I want to change them to low (standard) speed. I was told that we don't have to change the entire light our or even the motor, only the plastic worm gear inside.

Has anyone here done this before? Can you advise?

Also does anyone here have a couple of the regular speed gears, that you want to sell or trade for my fast ones?

thanks

If you only change only the worm gear, it will not mesh with the teeth on the reflector assembly. I'm pretty sure the gears are all the same, and you have to change the motor. Check with Code 3 to make sure.

look on the motor and see if it says "fast". If it does, then its the newer style that needs a motor change to switch speeds. Post a pic and we can tell you which style you have and how to switch it up.

I was under the impression that when rotators were sped up, the manufacturer (Code 3 in this case) would just use a lower voltage motor (something like a 9 volt motor) that would spin faster under 12 volts. It seems expensive for them to have totally different gear ratios just for the sake of making rotators spin faster.

On the older rotators and motors, the worm gear was the only change necessary to speed up the rotator. On the newer ones, the gear teeth are different (wider spaced) and the original worm gear swap won't work.
