After two years of searching, the Lightbar God's have finally bestowed upon me a California Spec. Code 3 XL lightbar with Select-Alert. It is now mounted on my 1972 Crown Firecoach and will remain so until the end of time. Here are a few videos demonstrating the Select-Alert feature...

Yeah, an SD with Select Alert would be less common than the XL with Select Alert. That's a really nice XL. Are the clear end caps original to that bar? Seems odd to have a California spec fire apparatus bar showing clear to the sides.

The clear end caps were standard issue on XL's that ran alley lights. I guess at one point Code 3 had XL end caps with small cutouts for alley lights, but those didn't seem to be as effective as having the entire end cap clear. On a standard bar, you could certainly run colored bulbs in the outboard rotators for a colored signal off the ends, but that wouldn't work with the amber cutouts on the Select-Alert.

I don't think the SD had that option. There were 2 versions of that bar(one had the top and botton plate style lamp holder with the vertical rods and used 6" head lamps for the staionary lamps. The newer used the par36 4" bulbs for the stationarys). I know for a fact that you could not put Stingers in the SD between the rotator assemblys. Not enough room. The back of the stinger hits the motor and tension assembly.

Both select alert and night probe options were available for Sd and Xl series code 3 bars.

WELL

I could have swarn someone said it was not possible due to space restrictions, and one of the reasons for the XL.

Here's some pics I found on the net a while back. They are not mine and I did not take them but just look at all them bars and lights and stuff !!!!!! There were more of these pics but I picked out some of the best angles. Alot of the bars were either the XL's or MX's with a few Twinsonics.

Let's go GET EM !
