This is a 2002 American LaFrance engine donated to FDNY after 9/11 by the Paris Fire Department. It was soon removed from active service due to maintenance and reliability issues and assigned to the part-time firehouse on Governors Island. Does anyone know what that lightbar is?

The bar is ALF specific with Whelen rotators & typically with 2 strobes on either side of the center rotator.

Looks like the Whelen lightbar they make specifically for ALF.

... Kinda funny that Paris FD gave an American LaFRANCE. Then again, I get silly past my bed time

Odd to see an Alf with only one siren speaker, one air horn, & no "Q". Yes they do have maintenance & reliability issues as I have experienced first hand with my stations 98 Alf that runs 2nd out behind a 78 Alf.

The American LaFrance engine shown above was designed around an FDNY spec, which includes only one 100watt siren speaker and one air horn. Some companies in the FDNY add "buff" sirens to their apparatus after the fact, but the job does not knowingly allow them

There are several ALF specific lights on them, Whelens. They were a pain in my a....... side for quite a few years!

The ALF's were built close by here in Freightliner's Cleveland NC plant. I do not miss them!! The Cummins powered one's we had were dogs! I think they are all reserves now, what's left of them.

I don't believe that your info on this truck is accurate. I am pretty sure this truck was purchased and delivered prior to 9/11. I remember seeing it at the shops that week. Also as can be seen by the serial number on the front it is a 2000 model not a 2002.

Nice try.

Not "trying" anything and I did miss the first "0" so you are correct there. Was there a 2nd ALF Pumper? I remember that truck (or one exactly like it) pulling into the shops the evening of 9/12.

There was a 2001 American LaFrance Eagle 1000 gpm pumper delivered before 9/11, this was meant to be on loan for evaluation purposes but FDNY purchased it after so many apparatus were destroyed on 9/11. I don't know what eventually became of it. *

There were also a 2002 Ferrara Inferno engine and a 2002 Luverne engine donated after 9/11. The Ferrara went into service briefly but was then assigned to the Bureau of Training, it later returned to Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. The Luverne wasn't even close to FDNY specs and was never permanently assigned to a house, it was eventually assigned as a "caisson" engine for funerals.

Station near me has a 2007 ALF pumper, rock solid dependable since it went in service. It's only been out of service for PMs and to repair damage from a minor crash...

After 9/11 The ALF was used by E34 in hells kitchen for a little while. The guys hated it. I am not sure where it went after E34 befor it was put on the island. I remember years ago govs island was a federal fire dept a friend of mine that was in the coast guard was stationed there in the 90's

If anyone has a copy of the FDNY operational refrence it will have the info in it

Yep when they switched over FDNY just slapped a couple of decals on the old yellow federal equipment and kept it:

What kind of engine is that? I kind of like the slickness of it...

That's a Duplex cab (although the small windows ahead of the driver's door give it the appearance of an early Federal/E-One cab) with what appears to be Seagrave bodywork.

GIFD was shut down back in 2003

The newer ALFs have been very dependable for our departments out here as well, usually just routine maintenance and an occasional pump issue here and electrical issue there from time to time. I'm pretty sure they are all powered by the Cummins (wasn't that the only engine offered?) and they get up and go (with a lot of black smoke at wide open throttle) for the ones older than 07.

What sort of issues have the ALFs had that you people hate them so much?

I for one think the styling of the ALFs is really nice too, gives it a more modern and professional look compared to the bland "everything looks the same" that the Pierces and Seagraves have had for the last 30 years.

I remember a few instances I've seen online or in print of ALFs catching on fire. When talking with folks in the fire service community, I've never heard much good things about recent ALFs. Guess there's a reason why the company has gone to shit.

The ALFs are notoriously unreliable in the city. That goes back to the ones purchased in the 70s, they just could not stand up in the city, same as the 2 Sutphen trucks they had. That wasn't the only Ferrara in service, there was a couple and one of them still is Engine 54. The Luverne could never pass pump quals and was used as the Caisson unit but I believe I heard it was destroyed during Sandy. The "Spirit of Louisiana" Ferrara Engine served FDNY after 9/11 and then sent back after Hurricane Irene, and then refurbed by Ferrara and sent back up here after Hurricane Sandy which it served Long Beach FD and now permanently serving West Hamilton Beach VFD.
