Ghostbusters Ecto Magnum

After the initial hangout, we took Erics WIP Bluesmobile into the industrial heart of Commerce City for some pictures. The results were, I feel, spectacular.

Around this time, Charles - the guy who founded Colorado Movie Cars with me - left for Los Angeles for the WE'RE GOING BACK celebration of Back to the Future. The DeLorean that he sold to a friend came into town and we had an opportunity to get a few shots of the nerdmobiles.

Charles said something that really stuck in mind just before I took this picture. We stood back after setting the box on the hood and sort of giggled to ourselves with how perfect it looked. The statement Charles made really embodied a feeling I've been unable to fully articulate in all the years I've been making stuff. He said, "It's like it was there the whole time," which to me is exactly the sort of sentiment one should get when the right part is added. When your additions and modifications are right, your mind just sees it as always having looked that way.

They are become the proud papas!

This was by far my favorite picture of the day, and I'd like to present it with a spin on a fairly played-out TNG meme

Just imagine that with all the readouts, binders, the alarm clock, and everything else up on the dash... good lord

In December of 2010 I got word from a friend of mine in Cincinnati who was in the process of restoring an actual 1959 Caddy Ecto. He was flying out to Los Angeles and wanted me to go with him. We had managed to score a date with the original Sony picture car while it was at a warehouse in Burbank. A full 8 hours to climb on top of, and through the real thing. We could flip the switches, twist the knobs, measure all the parts and score a bunch of until-then unknown part serial numbers!

I jumped at the chance and flew out! While I was out there, I connected with another friend, Bryan Fear, who owns a 1959 Cadillac Superior Ecto. He lives in San Diego and picked me up from the airport. I got to spend a day cruising with him, snapping shots of the car when we stopped. This was the first time I had gotten to experience a real 1959 on the road, and it was incredible!

Most of the pictures we took were close-up references and documentation of part numbers, so it's probably mind-numbingly boring to anyone but us NEEERRRDDDS.

Our first glimpse of the 1.

HDR is overly-trendy, but I really like how this one came out. I'll be posting the rest of my pictures here shorty (as soon as I finish uploading my 300+ reference shots)

Of course we couldn't go to Burbank without swinging by Warner Bros. to hang with our friend Wes and seeing their transpo museum one more time.

And, you know, how could I pass up a chance to to sit on the real Batpod...

And of course it wouldn't be a trip for me without seeing at least one SR-71....

In addition to the haunted house tours, I also make the car available for events, so long as the riders donate to a local non-profit. Every so often I get requests for weddings.

Real fun blasting through Denver, poking the bear with people who'd seen the Ecto but never thought they'd get a chance to ride in it!

I'm so glad this build has front and rear lightbars. This is my favorite "non-hearse" ecto. Very clean, not cluttered. Thanks for posting.

Well, you've GOT to!

In 2011 I had the opportunity to visit Seattle, Washington. I'm not gonna pass up a chance to put this thing on a ferry!

We had a lot of fun in the Seattle area. Visited the Boeing plant, drove all over the place, ran into a convoy of 20 other Magnums to say hi, lots of good stuff. But here's the number 1 story of the trip:

Late Saturday night, while trying to discern the location of a rattling sound coming from under the car, I got hit by a police officer's flashlight beam. What started with the simple question of "is that yours or are you stealing it?" turned into a telling of now-mythical anecdotes and ended with me giving him a ride around the block, onking at people and playing "Bad Boys" out the roof speakers.

Dude, I am jealous on so many levels its unreal. You have done a hell of a job with this. The hot Ghostbuster girls are great too!

I would love to see those edge's be replaced with Freedoms with blue domes. Overall bad-ass!

I am a huge Knight Rider fan and would love to one day own a KITT replica, either the TransAm or Mustang.

Thanks man! I've totally had it with the Edges, but I haven't ever seen Freedoms for less than $600 each. Am I looking in the wrong places?

Wanted: Warning Equipment

I would say either look for a Texas DPS Freedom (TXDPS, they really liquidated a ton of bars over last couple years, can usually find them pretty cheap), or a "barebones" Freedom. Only need to populate to the front of the front bar, and rear, of the rear bar.

Either that, or you could convert your Edge bars to Freedoms. Might be able to find parts cheaper than replacing the full bars. Also need new lenses on those Edges if you went that route!!

Really looking forward to that major upgrade!!!!!!!!

(Would also make it easier on your cars electrical, less drain on battery, and can run the LED bars without the car running ,versus killing your battery with strobe bars by doing that)!!!!

Since those edges seem to be in good shape, I would would just look for the LED modules. It also helps that each bar only need to be half populated (no need to have rear-facing modules when it's up against that box on the roof)

My bars are a lot rougher than they look, I assure you! Mutant, chopped-up power supplies, broken reflectors, rust everywhere. They shine up nice on the outside, but they are astonishingly filthy inside. And I actually have a number of "inside-facing" lights to illuminate the roof box, so it isn't drowned out by the flashes.

Time to start saving, I suppose! Someone offered a pair of bars for $900, which isn't unreasonable but just not doable at this point in time.

Ugh, I'd also have to figure out how to control the new bars using the existing setup. This sounds like an over-the-winter project to me!

My thoughts exactly! :bonk:

Here's a photo of the real Ecto before conversion.

I actually have a hand in this. The location of the Ecto-1A was not known for about 3 years, until last Friday when a picture of a dilapidated car popped up in my instagram feed (I know, right?). I emailed the user and asked specific questions and it turned out the photo was taken at the Sony Prop Store in Culver City. The 1A had just been moved outside. I'm actually pretty close friends with AJ Quick, the guy who wrote that petition and runs GBfans - he was with us on our first trip to California to Warner Bros, he went to Seattle and New York with us, and he works out of a warehouse here in Denver. We were actually supposed to go see a Batmobile up in the mountains last night before I got a call from a local newsman who wanted to promote the Ecto Tours.

He's definitely the driving force behind the petition, I found the car and we both have been trying to figure out ways to approach Sony over it.

Eureka defiled by George Barris.

Also, selling under false information and inflated value. They want it to go for $80k, it will only get close to that if the winning bid is hugely misinformed.

I'm not hugely fond of the Eureka as an Ecto. I'd rather see a 61-63 Miller, I think it's the window borders that put me off.
