Grote Motorcyle Beacon

I ran across this posting on Facebook Marketplace for a 1979 Harley Davidson FLHP 1200 Electra Glide, former Colorado State Police motorcycle. The first thing that caught my attention was the the Grote model 7622 beacon mounted on the rear. I have seen my share of police motorcycles over the years and never seen one with such a large beacon on it. The listing mentions it has both a manual tire siren and an electronic siren, both on the left side in front of the saddle bag. I believe the black “police” cover is over the electronic siren speaker. I have to imagine this was not how it was when originally in police service. Perhaps the beacon and electronic siren were added later when it went into service as an escort motorcycle.

I think your assumption that it was added for “show” is probably accurate as the only rotating beacon I’ve ever seen on a (U.S.) police moto was the Fireball (or later strobe equivalent). Looks kind of dorky, but at the same time, being a light aficionado, I endorse creativity:D!

Least useful while responding as the rider blocks the low mounted light being seen from the front. Most useful parked at an intersection, but at idle there's no way the bike's generator could keep up with the amp load of all those lights. Kind of reminds me of NYPD putting fullsize message boards on Fortwo cars. Just because you can, doesn't mean..... etc.

In November 1956 George Whelen donated to the Joliet, Illinois Police Dept. the FIRST rotating warning light developed for motorcycle use. Before the Fire Ball motorcycle application.
