Just won this, what looks to be a NOS S&M vintage oval warning light.

I've been looking at these for a long time, and am pleased to grab one, especially in this condition.I'm guessing 1930s-1940s, can anybody confirm the vintage?

I've only seen pictures of them used in pairs on the back of fire trucks, and as center roof mounted on police fire and ambulances.
Hopefully the seller packages it well for you. I can't imagine how difficult it would be do find a replacement bulb...

Nice grab, Dan.  Don't think it's quite that old.  Last one of these I saw was on the rear of Joe Ortiz' 1968 Trinity Buick ambulance out in California.  Trinity ambulances were built here in TX.   Of course, it could've been a NOS light that Trinity had around that went on the ambulance.  I've seen some of them on older apparatus, too, though.  If it were older, it would have an incandescent bulb somewhat like the lollipops. If that's a sealed-beam, then it would be somewhat newer.

Not a sealed beam Skip.

It has a 6 Volt bulb, reflector, cloth covered wire, and glass lens.

Well, that does make it considerably older, Dan.   After I made the post I remembered seeing one of these roof-mounted over the cab of Joe's 1947 Chevy panel-truck rescue wagon.  Where it is mounted it is steady-burn red per CA regulations. The truck has a Mars FL light on the left fender lettered "FIRE" and a bit unusual for that old of a truck, a Q mounted on the rt. fender.  I think if you Googled "Joe Ortiz '47 Chevy Rescue" you might find it.

That sounds accurate enough, Dan. The S&M lights have been around for many years.  Midland's early American-LaFrance firetrucks had S&M red sealed-beam lights cowl-mounted. Those were trucks that they had from 1952-c.1956.

Joe Ortiz leases vintage emergency vehicles to the movie studios out west and has a large inventory of vintage fire trucks, ambulances and rescues.  I got to visit his "compound" when I was there in the summer of 2002 for PCI's Summer Meet. They had this year's meet this past Saturday....darn it!

Since his '47 Rescue has an oval S&M light as I mentioned, I'd be willing to be that the one on his Buick ambulance is something he added sometime back, and not something that had come with the ambulance from Trinity's plant here in TX, as I had speculated.

BTW, Dan, that summer meet is something you would enjoy.  The actual meet is held at a place north of Burbank known as Hansen Dam, with a lot of static displays from all L.A. County emergency services. But the event is kicked off early on Saturday morning with a Rollin' to the Rescue Code 3 Run that starts at a specified place, like Joe's compound in '02, and it features all the vintage fire trucks, rescues, and ambulances that are the combined forces of PCI, SPAAMFA and the Crown Firecoach Enthusiasts.  The original Engine 51 on Emergency! is a Crown.   PCI President Lou Farah has a Crown pumper as well as a nice 1969 Stoner/Chevy high top Suburban ambulance.   I had the extreme pleasure in driving Lou's Suburban ambulance in the Code 3 run in '02.  Can you imagine running Code 3 on an L.A. freeway with an LAPD escort with all those lights and sirens going all at once????  Like the old Beach Boys' song:  We had fun, fun, fun!

I went back and took another look at the light.   If you really want to make it bright, and the socket for the bulb is single-contact, you could put a 1019 bulb in it and really light things up.  I think you've heard the story of how we did that to an old Mars DL8 light.

Is that red one yours?  Very nice. That amber one needs some TLC, though.

I couldn't believe the price on the red one, but it looks like NOS at the very least.

No, the red one in the last link is not mine. The one that I got has a black housing, in the first post,  and is definitely NOS, and unblemished.

Luckily, I got it for a whole lot less than the one in the link, and in better condition.

Just getting blind in my old age, Dan. Didn't notice the black housing. Someone will get a nice light with that chrome housing on the other.  BTW, I'm still looking for a pair of FS3s that don't cost an arm and a leg!  I've got one that my late friend Harold had. It has a 24-volt bulb, but that's no problem, and it looks NOS.  Now to find another!

Very cool! I picked one of those up at an old auto parts store that shut down about two years ago, they had been in business since the '30's. They were throwing everything away that was left behind when they sold out, it was up in the attic with a lot of old truck parts. They let me take it for free, It was in the original box and had paperwork and hardware with it too. I also got a Yankee light and mirror display and a Grote light display, yup, for free!
