Man, I got it bad. Has anyone been watching some of the JFK TV shows about the assassination. I'm looking at things like shots of the presidential limo rolling deown Elm St pass the School Book Depository, and seeing the red flashers in the bumper of the car. Notice 4 clear headlights?

Don't tell any of them but that old stuff is collectible. The means more of it for those of us in the loop.

As to the old fart remark - One of the local Fire Chiefs always waits until we are in a room full of people and then asks me what it was like to ride with Johnny and Roy... :D

I have been watching some of the documentaries as well and noted the ambulance that took JFK to Parkland had a 17 and a double set of FS lollipops. I was 5 attending public school in San Antonio and recall being dismissed early that day with many of the parents crying and the mood being extremely somber. We watched the funeral procession a few days later on several TV's in the gym which I recall as vividly as the Apollo 11 landing a few years later.

Some of you may remember the discussion on this "JFK Naval Ambulance" a few years ago when it went up for auction. It sold for big dollars even though it was thought by many to be a fake.

Oh you children! I was 18 and in my first year at Odessa College (Midland College didn't exist back then). I worked at Rix Funeral Home in Odessa and was in one of the guy's apartment playing his chord organ when one of the guys who was extremely anti-Kennedy walked in. I had been in "Youth for Kennedy" in high school and still had my JFK stickers on my car. So the guy saunters in and says, "Come look, Skip, yourpresident has just been shot, ha, ha!" So I said, "Oh yeah, sure!" So he practically drags me to the dayroom where the TV is on, and Walter Cronkite is telling the story. So I watched all the coverage until I had to leave for my 1:00 class. And so I drive up to the campus and continue listening on the radio, and at straight-up 1:00 they announce that JFK had died from his wounds. They shut the college down right then and didn't reopen until after the funeral. My mom was a switchboard operator for Humble, and they shut the building down. Needless to say, I was very shaken up! CBS had a neat segment on TV the other night with the first audio from the Dallas PD radio traffic that day. I've seen all the footage a hundred times, but that's the first good audio I've heard.

Anyone notice the Ford ambulance sitting in the ER drive at Parkland? That was the "real" O'Neal ambulance that eventually transported Oswald. Note that the ambulance had a roof-mounted Q flanked by four DoRay lollipop lights with a Federal 17 beacon in the rear. That was the common outfitting for Texas ambulances back then, not the twin 17s and WL siren that appeared on the "O'Neal" ambulance that sold for mega-bucks a few years back.

The sirens on the Secret Service cars were not 78s, they were WLs. The big Chrysler that Eisenhower rode in also had a fender-mounted WL siren.

The audio I mention above was the first I've heard where you can actually hear all of the sirens above the radio traffic when they're all headed to Parkland. CBS' Bob Shieffer had a similar special Saturday night, but I missed it, as I was out for the evening. Hard to believe it's been 50 years!
