Anyone using an IPad mounted in their vehicle instead of a Toughbook or other laptop?

I'm thinking about picking up a used Gen1 3G IPad now that prices will be coming down and using it in the vehicle. Have looked at a variety of mounts for it online, but wanted to hear any experiences and see any pics of the install.

Use is mostly for access to radar when deploying storm spotters while mobile and to be able to move it into a mobile command post (converted ambulance with limited space) during events where we have large cowds and need to monitor weather.

Thanks

Any Jotto Desk, Havis, or any other computer mount would work for what you need. What kind of vehicle do you drive?

Forgot to put that in the original message. I have a Chevy Astro Van that this will go into. I already have a floor console with radios between the front seats and am thinking about the ProClip dash mount so that it will be easy to put an additional mount on the wall in the CP. Mounting it to the radio console will not put the screen far enough forward without getting in the way of drink holders and center glove box, so up tight against the dash is the better choice.

Mostly wanted to see what others have done or hear about anything to avoid. Thanks for the quick response!

RAM Mounts makes several, including one that locks. Their customer service reps are good and will help you qualify what parts you will need.

Hadn't thought about it but locking would be good. It will usually only be in the vehicle when I'm in it, but there are those times where you leave the vehicle for a minute and anything can happen.

Will take a look at theirs. Thanks!

Here is my setup:

$12 Mount from eBay. Bolted it directly to the console and secured it with an L bracket for strength. Is keeps the pad very secure and yet gives me access to the Dock and Audio ports.

Oh, and yes thats an OtterBox case that protects the pad. Worth every penny!

Thanks to all for the links to the Ram Mounts and info.

Wire King - That's what I was looking for. Very nice, clean setup!

Now that I've seen that I have an idea that might work on my radio console and still allow me to access the storage box in the middle of the dash, which has a door that flips open inward (toward the driver and passengers). Thanks!

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but here is some by Gamber Johnson called the tabcruzer

TabCruzer | Rugged Docking Stations and Vehicle Mounts

The TabCruzer is by far the best available. Unlike most others, it's not just a holder, but rather a full dock. Very solid, can lock, and most importantly has a docking connector so it'll charge/sync while it's in the cradle. It is also "Made for iPad" so it's been tested by Apple (I'm not allowed to say it's "Apple approved", but you get the point).
