1/6/11 - A man was hospitalized following an accident this afternoon that resulted in significant traffic issues on the evening commute. Livingston County Sheriff Bob Bezotte tells WHMI that they received a 9-11 call before 3pm about an accident on M-59 at Eager Road involving an EMS unit that was transporting a patient to the hospital. Preliminary investigation shows that a 2001 Chevy Malibu heading northbound on Eager Road failed to yield right-of-way and crashed into the ambulance, which had its lights and sirens on. Livingston County EMS Director Jeff Boyd tells WHMI that the ambulance was en route to Pontiac when the accident occurred. The two paramedics inside suffered relatively minor injuries that were described as bumps and bruises. The patient was subsequently loaded into a different ambulance and taken to U of M. The driver of the Malibu suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital and then transported to St. Joes Ann Arbor. His name is being withheld by police at this time. Westbound M-59 was closed at Latson Road and eastbound M-59 was closed at Eager Road for hours due to the accident investigation.
