I am looking at a fender mount look alike factory replacement that does AM/FM and VHF.

Where are you connecting your mic? Rear of the head?

Actually running the mic right off the brick... Into the center console to keep out of the way.

Its a work in progress, the mic will be mounted in the center console. I am running it off of the radio, not the control head. It closes fine because there will never be a mic mounted there.

The more I look at this, the more I want to take out my Jotto console and custom mount my equipment in the factory console... lol
