my holy grail SDFD CTS

I was visiting friends in SoCal over Christmas and mentioned to my friend that "if he saw any of the old style square shaped lightbars to beg, borrow or plead for it". He said lets go down to the place that sells used fire equipment, he has a bunch of stuff. We went down the next day and I found a San Diego FD CTS sitting on the rack upside down. I pulled it out and saw it had its mounting feet and wire still attached, no cracks in the domes and the TS-100 was still in the speaker tray. The owner said "it's worthless to me, $50.00 and it's yours"; I paid him cash on the spot. When I got it back to my friend’s house I took the domes off to get some pictures of the inside, it's got some grime, but all the bulbs light and the motor spin. The rotator's were slow and interment at first, but came up to normal speed in about 30 seconds. I have no idea how long it has been sitting on the rack, but it's in great shape. Domes are clear and no crazing, I give them an 8 of 10; they have some scratches on the top from being slid on the storage rack.
I got it home and it's on my work bench to be cleaned up and displayed.
How do I know it's a SDFD CTS? SDFD ran one amber and one red beacon before the Calif Vehicle Code allowed white to the front, because amber was a brighter color than red.
Couple of questions, the end cap says A3, but it's stenciled like the A1 models??? And the motor has flat sides; looking on the freeweb site I'm lead to believe that's the A1 style motor???
Of course there's a vid, for the light bar porn addicts.

the motor is a series 1 motor. is the frame black? if it is, that would be an indicator of an early A1 model. not sure, but the one rotator base pictured appears to be the metal type and not the later aluminum type, which would also be an indicator of an early A1 model and would have been seen on twinsonics with a black frame. the endcaps appear to be correct for an A3 model.

The rotating bulb holders are definitely Series A1 and the motor would only be appropriate for Series A1 as well. The endcaps are interesting. The Series A3 CTS endcaps that I have previously seen were actually marked as model CTS1. Fascinating.

Yes the frame is black, and I got a magnet and the rotator base is metal, def not aluminum.

Thanks, I have been scouring the 'net for years looking for a nice CTS expecting to pay at least a couple of hundred buck, then this falls into my lap.

$50 for a CTS. Lucky guy!

And the amber/red setup is very interesting. Something different than ever blue/red.

I had to try real hard to keep a poker face. I never thought one of these would fall into my lap.

That had me wondering about the model when I opened it up, because the end caps and motor didn't match up. I really doubt that a mechanic at a large metro FD would special order end caps, and looking at the freeweb/twinsonic info, the Series A3 are printed not stamped. Maybe somebody here can shed some light on it.

Yes the frame is black, and the rotator base is metal, not aluminum. I got a magnet and checked. Looking at the freeweb info, I'm guessing 68 or 69 build date.
Do these motors have a build date, like the AreoDynic motors? I haven't pulled it yet to clean it up.

the series 1 motors didn't have a stamp to indicate date of mfg. the endcap stamping appears to be factory. i have seen later model twinsonic endcaps stamped like that. maybe they got the wrong endcaps on the wrong bar. you couldn't go wrong with $50 for that one.

I'm goind to go with a early Series A bar that some one changed the end caps at some point. If someone chimes in with more info, I'm open to changing my mind.

I've always loved RED/AMBER bars! I think LAcityFD ambulances used that color combo as well long ago. Then there were all those police agencies in Arizona back in the 1970s that used the same.

Thanks.
I fell in love with them when I became a Police Officer in the San Diego area in the early '90's. By then they had switched over to the AreoDynic's. Generally they were amber on driver's side and red on pass side. The engines and trucks still had roof beacons, if I remember correctly they were amber on driver's side and red on officer's side. If you have some pictures of an LAcityFD ambulance, I would love to see them.

I figured that if I didn't post a video, that I'd hear about it.
Thanks, and your welcome.

I remember seeing that ambo on E! It has a B&M Super Chief siren. The siren sound that was usually dubbed in for the ambos was a recording of a B&M S-8.

Schaefer Ambulance used red/amber 184 Powerlights on their ambulances.

Thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure it was 184's that SDFD used on their apparatus up to the 90's. I'm assuming this CTS came off a chiefs or utility vehicle, because the domes are in outstanding condition for a '68 or '69 build date.
