Hello Brothers and Sisters!

This time I have a couple German Hella lightbars I acquired while I was visiting. Hella is one of the major players in the emergency lighting field. They have a series called the "RTK" series which started with the RTK 1 in 1973. RTK is short for "Rundum Ton Kombination", which translates into "Revolving Sound and Light System". The red mini RTK 4 is a rare special mini-lightbar export version built for the Russian police, Chinese fire dept. and Arabian fire dept's. Red was "export only" and is nearly impossible to find even in Germany now-a-days. The other longer blue lightbar is the ever popular RTK 6 Autobahn version. It features strobes on the outboard sides, special fast-flash directional strobe to the front (for high speed emergency vehicles), rear amber hazard blinkers, a socket for a pole mounted extension light on top (long distance warning like NYSP), an integrated siren amplifier and speaker system, and front and rear LED matrix message signs. The outboard and inboard strobes are a high speed single flash. The siren is a typical high-low sound as found in Germany. The pole mounted light could be strobe or halogen ( I don't have it yet as it is still coming). The LED matrix signs are fully programmable via controller. The whole light and sound system in controlled via interior, dash mounted controller( which i do not have yet, but is coming). The two black plastic brackets mounted to the top cover are for a sign which would have to be manually inserted if desired. Unfortunately as soon as a new model comes out the older one are immediately discontinued. Hella is now running the RTK 7 currently.

WOW, the RTK 6 is definitely one of the most interestinly configured Euro bars you have posted to date. Certainly is interesting that they put the message board behind the speaker grille.

Initially you would think that the single strobe on the grille area is a pre-emption emitter of some sort. Now I see this one is not.

Do EU countries use Pre-emption systems that you know of?

No pre-emption does not exist currently. Leds behind the grille is common for Hella, mainly to be seen at night.

All are very nice. That mini bar could have really made a lot of sales to volunteer firefighters over here back in it's day..

There is no pre-emption systems that I'm aware of in Europe. Certainly not in the UK. I was looking at these many years ago and I think they are a great concept. How well do they work in reality?

Sorry to hi-jack your thread Eric
