Odd FDNY pickup?

I apologize for not having a photo. It was dark and I didn't have my camera out.

I was driving southbound on 440 on Staten Island and saw a red pickup with a large (and old) amber/clear rotator lightbar, a red/red Talon, on the dash, and two red strobes in the grille come up behind me, all lit up. I moved over and the truck passed. I think it was a red late model pickup with a cap, and another (but different) amber bar on the rear of the cap. I didn't get a good look at the markings.

It just didn't look right, and I thought back to that Staten Island whacker with the red pickup with FDNY markings. Anyone know if the vehicle I saw is a legit FDNY unit? Not going to lie, with the amber all over the place and the sprinkle of red it screamed imposter to me...

OMG I just saw that guy last week in the old FDNY suburban with the scraped off FDNY shield and all the amber lights!!! He was in a dunkin donuts parking lot next to a Tahoe with a liberty bar. All that amber on one truck would make me very suspicious.

It's not either one of those. The front amber bar had an MX shape to it, but you could tell it was pretty old. The rear bar looked like an old edge. The only graphics I got a good look at were the striping down the side (FDNY style with 'FIRE' embedded in it) and the KEEP BACK 200 FT on the tailgate.

It looked very suspicious. I was just about to try to catch up with him to get a plate number or unit number when he decided to exit 440, cutting a car off in the process (quite badly, I might add).

FDNY has some pickups with amber bars, used by Fleet Services and by the Fire Safety unit for transporting trailers, however they don't have caps. There is also at least one pickup on Staten Island belonging to Marine 9, but also without a cap. However I think the giveaway is the "amber/clear" lightbar, sounds like a wannabe to me.

Ok, some one please explain this to me, not the wreck, the light bar. I take it this truck is still in service with the fire department. But with the amber lights, is it considered a first responder vehicle or is it more like a scene clean up or recreation vehicle? Not very well versed in the lights of New York.

It's my understanding that FDNY has quite a few non-emergency vehicles. Building inspections, tow trucks, utilities, etc. No need for red lights on those units, which is why my sighting the other night really confused me.

It is a building unit. In the thread it was originally posted in, there were more pictures.

Wasnt there a thread on here some months back about a guy that had an old pickup truck painted like FDNY complete with decals, lights and such. But not affiliated with FDNY. Some whacker or something?
