UPDATED 8:12 p.m. – Troopers confirm the names of the two lawmen as Kris Willhight, a Burns Flat Police Officer, and Brian Beck, a Washita County Undersheriff.
DILL CITY, Okla. – A community in western Oklahoma is mourning after a chase claims the lives of two law enforcement officers from the area.
Thursday afternoon, authorities say officers with the Washita County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve a felony warrant for 27-year-old Quentin Johnson, of Sentinel, when he took off in a car.
Officers with the Burns Flat Police Department also participated in the pursuit.
At some point during the chase, Johnson crashed his vehicle.
He died as a result of that accident.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, two officers, who were both involved in the chase, collided about three miles away.
Authorities say the crews were trying to meet up at a location when the accident occurred.
We’re told both officers died at the scene.
Lt. Brian Orr, with the OHP, confirms one of the officers was a member of the Burns Flat Police Department and the other was an undersheriff with the Washita County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators say this situation is “pretty tragic” for two small agencies, where everybody knows everybody.
Law enforcement agencies from across the state are offering their condolences to the victims’ families.
