Hello friends,

Ok heres one for the optics experts:

Is it me or there is a somehow optic ilusion of light spread placement between the blue and red light in a (thin) led light bar? I mean the thing is I have been seen a few of these thin chineese led light bars and noticed than when seen from a distance it seems like if the blue led side of the light bar is lower in position than the red side of the light bar.

I swear I can see this and I really would like to know why this happens? I know Blue shows up stronger than red at night, would it be that simple fact of why I percive this particular optical ilusion?

Is it only me or have anyone else seen this too? btw the led light bars I have seen at night are those 4 led module modules made in China, in my city some Patrols also use Whelen Justice light bars but I junt don´t think it happens with the Justice led light bars...

So, any imput? Thanks for the help.

yes its an optical illusion

ufff, wow thought it was my eyes but when I asked my wife and she said laughing at me that I had bad vision I opted to ask my flashaholics fellows lol!

ok, so now we know it´s an ilusion, now do we know the reason why it happens? does it happens also during daylight hours or only at night?

I´ts really noticeable...

It happens to me a lot. In the daytime it's not noticeable because I often can't see the blue LEDs at all, but at night it's very noticeable. It's most noticeable when it's a combination of red and blue lights, which is allowed by law, but still somewhat rare on Virginia police vehicles. (All blue is most common.)

It happens on most bars. I see it on our Vista SLs at work, not so much on the Liberties the HP uses. Looks goofy, but nothing you can do about it.

I only notice it when looking at light setups in my rear view mirror. If I drive towards a traffic stop, I don't see it. Once I pass the stop and look in my rear view mirror, I notice it.

As far as I know, this phenomenon is attributed to the construction of the prismatic "day/night" rear view mirror. This is described in detail here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rear-view_mirror#Dimming

I have noticed it on both Arjents (clear domes, red and blue caps) and Liberties (red and blue lenses) alike.

My Department uses Whelen LED bars with colored red/blue lenses. At night, while approaching a traffic stop from a distance, it is VERY noticable. It appears the blue is on a lower level than the red. As you approach and get closer, it diminishes.

All depends on if you have viewed the lights with anything between. Next time you see it with your vehicle, stick out your head and see if there's any changes. Chances are, it's the glass.
