outdoor scanner antenna

I am looking to mount some sort of outdoor scanner antenna to receive only (no tx.) on low band, vhf, uhf, 700 and 800 mhz. My question is can I use one of the new larger HDTV antennas that mounts on a mast and change the connectors or will that not work? Any other ideas would be helpful. My budget is around 50 bucks give or take.

your best bet would be a discone antenna. tv antennas are set to receive tv signals only. :bonk:
