Ok, so I have some NOS Grote Par 46 light head housings, Par 46 bulbs and Julian McDermott Par 46 lenses... however, the filters make it too thick for the outer ring to fit onto the light housing. This is the same combination that CHP used in the 70's and 80's so I am not sure why I can't get it to all fit together. Does anyone know if CHP had to modify something to get all of the components to fit together??

They were Amber/Red for years, the blue light was added sometime in the 80's..

Since we know what set up CHP used, I don't have the blue and amber part number off hand but the correct bulb for the red is GE 4001R. Its a colored bulb.

I am thinking that they Amber bulb is part #GE 4434A. Anyone have any idea what the part number for the sealed beam blue par 46 is??

The GE 4001 bulb was available in red, blue, amber, and clear.

I know that the 4434A was used in the Trio T2 can lights, but I am not sure if that is the bulb that CHP used in the rear deck.

The chrome Grote Par46 housing will take any Par46 bulb, and are still available from any auto parts store. I put two brand new ones on my motorcycle with GE 5001R bulbs (new/brighter version of the 4001R)

The older Dietz 9-51 housings have a notch in the face so that the 4001R/5001R bulb is "clocked" correctly. I do not know if the 4434A would clock correctly in the Dietz housings.

The GE red bulbs are actually coated, as opposed to red glass. The coating is so clear that many people mistake it for red glass. The blue coating is not as clear, and looks like it was painted on.
