Ok I am looking into a VHF and possibly a UHF HH Radio. I have always been a fan of Motorola but have used Icom and Kenwood and they seem ok also. So my question is what brand of radio is good quality and had programming software available without hassle. I guess I am weird but I want to be able to program my own radio and change any options it may have at any time. Please help me figure this out.

Thanks

vertex is most likely the easiest...... they make great radios , and most dealers will give you the software free.........

You didn't mention your BUDGET, which is the primary issue, and whether you want the current equipment or if older stuff will work for you.

If used is okay, keep an eye on FleaBay for a suitable radio with accys and programming software. Get whatever good deal comes along and don't worry about brand names.

All else being equal, I prefer Motorola, then in order would go with Vertex, EFJ and Kenwood, but all are top-quality brands.

IMO: Kenwood is top of the line for me, their software is very easy and their software isn't outrageous like the big M

Me, too. I use primarily Kenwood. The Vertex programming software has been terrible to learn, coming from the Kenwood background.

I wouldn't pick a radio based on the programming software, unless there were no other way to decide. This would be like picking a restaurant based on the brand of knife the cook is using.

Depends on how often you have to pick up and use your knife... and how often you cut yourself with it.

You will also need to consider the local dispatch and emergency services radio system where you will be using the radio. For example, an LTR or NEXTEDGE system is Kenwood. Is the system migrating to digital? Then you may need Motorola or an E.F. Johnson radio with Motorola digital configurability. And, is the VHF system changing to UHF. Or is the locale going to 800 MHz?

Does the radio needs to be intrinsically safe (for HAZMAT) or submersible for water rescue teams(ICOM can be less costly) , or configured with a speaker/mike or headset. Usually Motorola accessories can be pricey.

And, let's remember under whose FCC license will you be operating. The FCC licensee must technically approve the mobile and portable radios authorized on their system.
