hey guys my name it john I work for a sheriff department in Nevada. right now I have issued a crown vic temp vehicle until my expedition get out of the shop. so my question for you guys is I have a ar-15 rifle both of my vehicle do not have gun racks for the long rifle shotgun only so right now my rifle sits in the trunk. I do not like leaving it in the trunk unsecured. anyone who prys open the trunk lid can have access to it. so I was wondering whats your guys ideals about a DIY gun lock that I can drop in the crown vic and then move to the expo once that's one done, something that I can at least lock it into and then if I need it rapidly with a push of a button I can get it out. I used to outfit police cars before I became a cop so I have experience with wiring and stuff, just wondering whats your guys ideal??

Check out Setina. They have some new stuff that is pretty nice. Question is how much space do you want the gun lock/cabinet to take up? Heck the local FBI guy here has  a chain welded to the trunk lid and the body frame with a pad lock on his gov vehicle (real high tech). There are a lot of places that make cabinets online. I think Sirennet does them now too. Here's a few to get you started:

If you are trying to do DIY, a cabinet might be easier. Getting it to mount right in the trunk area will be a chore though.

you know I love all of those in the links and they are all really good locks. however really pricey.. I was hoping there was some ideals out there with something DIY and cheaper. I don't mind spending a couple of hundred dollars on something that I can move from vehicle to vehicle. was just wondering if there was some people out there that had the same problem cheap department that will not pay for a good gun lock..lol.. I will keep looking tho thanks for the links they were good

I was given a decommisioned horizontal weapons mount from one of the depts I do work for.  I mounted it to the floor between the back seat and my gear cabinet in my tahoe.

I would imagin you could find one either on here or around your area and pretty easily mount it in the trunk in a number of ways..

Wire it up with a switch hidden in the trunk or along with your other weapons mount (with a longer delay) from your lighting  controller.

I don't think you could secure a weapon easier or cheaper  and it would/could be just as secure as any other method.

Your needs are different, you said for the Expedition you want something that you can push a button & just grab & go, but for the CV you just want to secure it from theft in the trunk.  I'd go with the high tech solution mentioned above, something like a thick vinyl covered cable through the action and locked to the vehicle frame in the trunk with a serious pick-resistant padlock like Abloy or Mul-T-Lock.  When you get your Expedition back just install the electric rifle rack you wanted all along.

http://bigskyracks.com make some great mounting solutions (I'm not affiliated with the company in any way)

If you are going towards a more DIY option, you might have some luck finding an old motorcycle AR-15  mount for sale and adapting it for your needs.

Good luck!!
