Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara (MHA) Nation, commonly know as: Three Affiliated Tribes (TAT). Main offices are located in New Town, but they cover the entire Ft. Berthold Indian Reservation in West Central North Dakota. My understanding is they used to be BIA Police at one point but the tribe wanted more control so they made their own law enforcement. The FBI still handles their serious investigations. They have several law enforcement agencies that operate under TAT. Game and Fish, Highway Patrol, Police, Tribal Security, Drug Enforcement, and a division that does commercial vehicle enforcement. They have different admins, which is evident by the difference in equipment. Due to the oil boom in western North Dakota, the tribe is very very wealthy and offers a lot of services to enrolled members.

North Dakota is not a Public Law "280" state, which means tribal can only enforce law on enrolled tribal members, and we can only enforce laws on non-enrolled individuals. Thus, we commonly work together on calls.

That is one badass pickup!!! But it says federal LE on it...how does TAT get by with doing that? (ie is it a BIA technicality?)

They are not BIA. Not sure why they use the federal LE markings. The only thing I can think of is they are maybe certified to enforce federal wildlife regulations much like our state game wardens are. I honestly don't know.

I talked with a tribal game warden in Michigan a few years ago.  They went to the federal wildland academy, the same academy as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service goes to.  They received their authority under federal law, but not through BIA.  The guy told me that they were going to be getting state authority soon.  I don't know if they were going to just go to a state academy or continue with the federal academy.
