HIALEAH GARDENS, Fla. (WSVN) -- An off-duty Miami-Dade police officer said he was forced to fire, when three men tried to rob him early Monday morning.
The incident occurred around 2:28 a.m. outside the Palmetto Liquor store near 103rd Street and Northwest 80th Court. According to Miami-Dade Police, the off-duty narcotics officer with the Miami-Dade Police Department was withdrawing money out of an ATM when three men pulled up in a vehicle. "These subjects arrived in a Ford pickup truck, blocked in his car and began to argue with this off-duty police officer," said Miami-Dade Police Detective Javier Baez.
Then, police said the three men jumped on the officer and started beating him. "The three subjects began to attack this officer profusely," said Baez. "The victim then drew his firearm and then fired at the subjects."
Two subjects were allegedly wounded by the officer. All three subjects drove themselves to Palmetto General Hospital where authorities caught up with them. The two wounded subjects are in stable condition. The third subject was taken into custody.
The police officer suffered only scrapes and bruises and is expected to be OK.
Authorities have confiscated a hard drive from the liquor store which might contain video of the attack.
Police are still investigating a motive and are trying to determine whether the officer was targeted.
