TK-790h won't transmit

I installed a TK-790h in my POV and I'm having trouble with it. When I key the mic you can hear it click on the other radio, but there's no audio coming through. Reception is fine (too good sometimes), I just can't get any audio to transmit. I tried swapping mics with another radio with the same results, so at least I know it isn't that...

Any ideas?

You will need to do some basic transmitter checks. First, check with a wattmeter to see if you transmit rf power. If you have a radio signal, then the problem may be internal to the voice modulation

If it has been more than a couple of years since the radio was bench tested, a check by the local radio shop is probably the best action.

Was this radio ever programmed to use a rear-connect audio path instead of the mic jack? Is it a remote head?

Thanks for the responses.

I bought it used but we programmed it with the same profile we use on our apparatus so theoretically it should work the same. If it turns out to be a problem with the transceiver is it worth taking in for repairs or would another used transceiver be cheaper?

The cost of repairs will depend on the nature of the problem. Trouble shooting will cost about $90 per hour around middle TN, then if any parts are needed and time to repair. I definitely recommend you try to find out the problem before buying another radio.

I paid about $295 for the 790 I am using. So the other factor to consider is what another mobile radio may cost.

I found a used transceiver on eBay for $175. There's no way repairs were going to be less than that. Now I just need to figure out what to do with the broken transceiver.

See if a radio shop may be willing to take it on consignment or buy it from you? If the repairs are simple, they may still make money on it or may be able to use it for repair parts.
