Vintage Lubock, Texas Fire Vehicles

Wow! Haven't seen AID's fleet in sometime, as I haven't been to Lubbock since '07. Are they still just west of Boston on 34th? I need to get up that way.

I worked for AID from just after they opened in August of '68 until after David Ehler took over in '72. By that time, we had our standby service for sporting events (Metro-Alert Ambulance) up and running. I still "moonlighted" for AID over the years, dispatching for them on occasion. From what I understand they have no competition at all for the transfer business. Check your PM.

I left Lubbock in June 2012 and when I did they were still at that location. They still don't have any competition as far as I'm aware. They usually post all over the city near the Loop to respond to calls, etc.

They've been at the 34th and Boston location for several years now. When I worked for them originally in the '60s after they first opened, they were on Broadway, two blocks east of University....right next to St. Elizabeth's convent. The nuns used to get a kick out of watching us take off on a run.

I was in Lubbock two weeks ago for the 50th anniversary celebration of KTXT-FM; but the whole time I was there I never saw AID or EMS out and about. Most unusual!

Wow! I've seen that picture a dozen times and never noticed that paper bag. I'm not sure when that pic was taken. As I note above, LFD got the Pontiacs in 1966. They were originally Air Force Blue and were repainted as you see. They oriignally only had the little beacon you see (an "M" light. It doesn't rotate. The bulbs flash sequentially) and a little EG siren behind the grille. LFD added the Dietz lollipops and the 66G siren on the fender. By the time I went to Lubbock to stay in 1968, all but two of the Pontiacs were gone. The remaining one was used as a "courtesy" at a few sporting events, and for many years was set up at the fair grounds when the fair was in town. When it came up for sale in the early '70s I tried to buy it at the auction and got beat by a guy from a car lot. He got it for just over $200 and then jacked up the price to over a grand! Haven't seen that car since the mid-80s, and it was still on the car lot.

That 66 still has the price tag on it too. !

Great photos Skip!

Yeah..someone else noticed that above in this thread. LFD ran a lot of 66Gs in the early days before switching to Interceptors on everything in the late '60s.
