Whelen Edge Help!

Greetings from across the pond!

I have recently acquired a vehicle that has a blue light bar on top.

Upon powering it up only the front halogen worked flashing in sequence.

Having looked online it is apparent that I need a controller to fully utilise the light bar full capabilities.

I tried this evening to ascertain what the model number is, unfortunately, there is no label to be found either in or out.

It says edge on the perimeter of the blue lens, so I'm guessing it's a Whelen edge.

The strobe power supply model number is EB6 (attached picture )

The matrix board code is BFEBA0000
96 SERIES EDGE MATRIX BOARD is written on the top.

There a two cables supplying the light bar, one is just 3 wires, black -12VDc, red +12VDc & red +12VDc

The other cable is made up of 15 small wires, (see picture)

From what I have read on the internet, i gather that the 15 small wires are trigger wires. I tried previously to trigger each wire to +12VDc but this had no effect, after opening up the light bar, i found that there was a blown 25amp fuse on the supply cable to the strobe power supply from the matrix board.

After replacing the fuse, on power up the front right corner strobe worked, so i proceeded to try the trigger wires.
out of the 15 wires, only 5 worked

Violet - Low power mode
Yellow - Driver alley light
White - Passenger alley light
White/Black - Front takedown flashing
White/Red - Rear takedown flashing

I could not get any other strobes to work apart from the front right corner strobe, upon further investigation inside the light bar
I found that there was a spare male plug 6 pin on the bottom right corner of the matrix board ( See picture)
There is also an cable 8 pin cable plugged into the top right corner of the matric board but is unplugged at the other end ( see picture)
Near the strobe power supply, there is a 6-pin female socket unplugged ( see picture)

So would any of the above have an effect on why the rest of the strobes aren't working? and if not what might cause the fault?

In order to control the light bar could anybody recommend a suitable switch/power control box such as the PCC-S9?

I would also like to fit sirens so would having a combined siren light controller such as the Whelen 295SLSA6 work?

A serial controlled bar should only have a large red and a large black power and ground and then two smaller communication wires. That type of bar would require a specially programmed controller. Generally if an edge bar has the full complement of wires It doesn't require a specific controller.

Viewing your pictures, I can see that there is a circuit breaker inside the bar which looks non factory, so likely there have been some modifications. Sometimes people try to wire around the relay board and run high current to the bar versus utilizing the low current switching of the relay board. Unless there's some very specific option installed that required that circuit breaker, I would say this bar looks like someone may have attempted to bypass the relay system.

You have a 96 series relay matrix bar which theoretically does not require a specific controller. It should rely on low current switching, but those low current wires should be able to be triggered with any power source. The eight pin plug you're talking about is probably the power from the relay board to the power supply for the strobes, which is why they're not working.

The large red wire goes to 12 volt power. The large black wire goes to ground. Then every smaller wire is a trigger for a specific function of the bar. These bars essentially worked by providing power and ground to the relay board and then triggering the relays with the smaller wires. Before you buy any sort of controller, I would confirm that the bar is actually in some semblance of working order. I would connect power and ground to the big wires and then one by one connect power to the small wires. The power supply needs to be plugged into the relay board in order to function.

I can provide you some more specific pictures and instructions when I get home, but it looks like you have a relay based low current switching bar from which the power supply has been unplugged.

OP if you want specific help, send me a PM and I can walk you through trouble shooting.

you don't need a "controller" its just 12v trigger wires,
not all wires will be used as they used a generic cable for most of the bars and did not sell them all with full options, same for the empty plugs
to see if the strobe supply or the strobes are bad, swap the working and non working heads to see if the power supply outputs are bad or if its the bulbs,
I have all parts available for the bar, even some NOS, as well as new lenses
