Whelen Euro-1 siren?!

Following my post about a new BMW demo Paramedic response car (http://elightbars.org/forums/f80/2013-bmw-320-paramedic-frv-55706/), I thought I'd check out the siren....


I was surprised at the last tone....

So I thought I'd have a dig around and find the siren unit.....


The Whelen Euro-1. What a horrible last tone!! I haven't seen or heard of it before, so thought I'd share it with you.

The last tone is essentially a powercall-whoop siren. I never would have expected it on a euro siren. The powercalls (or "warbles" by other manufacturers) are typically used in conjunction with the mechanical Q-siren, but some areas (ie some counties in Pennsylvania) use them as standalone sirens. IMHO the powercall tone is effective because it doesn't get muffled up by the mechanical siren as much as some other electric siren tones & because it grabs attention of ppl that have never heard it before and give the WTF? look/response lol. I honestly would've gone with the basic whelen wail/yelp/hyperyelp, but that's just me

So an interesting note, I googled the part number in the picture to see if I could find an install guide and the results turned up the Howler, which appears to use the same housing as this euro-1 siren. Makes me wonder if there are settings in the unit to change the output or if they are just using the same housing with different internals???

I never said that they were just a PA thing; I just use PA as a single example of a place where they're popular.

It is supposed to emulate the 'warble' tone of a General Electric Power-Call/Siren. The GE Power-Call/Siren was introduced in the mid-1960s and was in production up until the 1980s. It is now a collector's item.

The Powercalls aren't just a PA thing, they're also wildly popular in Maryland, DC, and Virginia. We use a Powercall on my engine at work in fact.

I think the Powercalls are popular all over. Just try buying an original G.E. Powercall off Ebay,etc. I have one of the little Whelen Gamma-2s and it has the Powercall sound and I wouldn't part with it.

I just installed a ALPHASL in my car last week. I changed the 3rd tone from Piercer to Powercall as soon as I installed it. I also have an original GE Power Call in my collection as well. Great sound that travels well in an urban environment.

Well, at least you've got a real Powercall, Mike. It's the one siren I've never had.

Yes, this is Alpha in European version, siren have specjal tone for France, UL, Germany, Holland, etc.


Basic switch is the same, but Euro1 have additional options:


Green - Cycle switch


Blue - Siren in use (icon)


Red/Wht - output 12V+ for controll switch


Org - Brn - Yel - Speakers + - +


Blk - Red - Power - +


Rest wire is the same as Alpha remote
