So i finally broke down and got a couple of ions. I mounted them vertical on my front liscence plate. I know it says to mount with the membrane down but can i do his without affecting them or will it cause damage

the optics on the lens are designed to be mounted horizontally

I would highly suggest not mounting them vertically. The "membrane" is a Gortex vent designed to let the housing "breathe" so that moisture doesn't build up inside like some of the M-series were notorious for in the first iterations of the series (now, according to Whelen, every lighthead will have one of those Gortex vents facing down).

However, it's not to say that you couldn't try and see what the results are. You may not have any problems at all as the Gortex is really meant for water vapor to pass in and out of the housing, rather than actual liquid. The optics really aren't an issue if you ask me.

ha. really? :hopeless:

stand in a dark room, aim the lighthead at a blank wall, and turn it on. then proceed to turn the lighthead horizontally, and then vertically. That will make a believer out of you.

the moisture is less of an issue than the optics are, if you ask me.
