Whelen Outer Edge Rear Pillar

I wonder if the lighthead optics are changed for the vertical-ish mounting?

I like the older outer edge the one that goes across the rear window, this new D pillar one looks goofy to me!

+1

This would be an application well-suited for some custom TIR lightheads with optics rotated at about 70 degrees from horizontal. Using linear lightheads in this configuration makes little sense as the pattern of the light output will be less than effective.

I gotta say i really do like that... Provides lighting when the hatch is up, and also defines the width of the vehicle...

thumbs up to whelen...

I like it I wish they would not axe the outer edge and expand it to other vehicles such as durangos. I have so many customers that use durangos and want stuff like this.

Now didn't Dallas PD have something like this? I saw pictures recently, but not sure if it was on the board or not.

no they dont but there are some tahoes running around with LINZ6's and vertexes on the pillars, but not this particular thing.

Hmmmm...

Mixed emotions... part of me REALLY likes this. I like the use of otherwise 'dead' space. The use of Linear optics providing better off-axis warning, means greater visibility. On the other hand, I would sort of prefer a more 'stealth' look, seeing as the Vertex is also mounted, it also gives plenty of off-axis warning, which might/would permit the other light heads to possibly be more recessed.

I am definitely a fan of 'more lighting' so long as its tastefully done, not just seeing how many lights someone can cram in somewhere, haha!

I will have to do some more mulling over it before I conclude my official stance. Nonetheless, bravo to not necessarilly the company selling these, but whoever thinks outside the box and comes up with these new applications/mounting options.

Since the Durango was discontinued, it's unlikely that this product would be offered to fit it.

I almost took the time to dig through the old boards and find a post of yours when someone questioned you about vehicles and you said something like I work on them as my job so I know about them or something likee that but figured it was un called for and I have a great deal of respect for you form your work.

I used the durango as an example because for whatever reason they are popular in my area, however I feel that it would be nice to have on other SUV models such as the new explorer police package, expedition, durango, jeep or what ever police agencies use outside of the "traditional" police SUVs. That same statement applies for all the products and mounts though.

Anyways just a thought but I do like the product and hope to sell some to departments that do have Tahoes lol.

I can understand the urge to do some nose-rubbing.....lol....the post you're referring to is when some ass-hat was advising a member to use whatever "Galls" flasher he had for a tail light flasher on a Charger. I think we both know that's a no-no, and I just had to get a little "uppity" on his ass!

Anyway, down here we had several agencies trying to buy Durangos because they were cheap and Dodge dealerships telling these agencies they weren't going to be made any longer and couldn't get them, so they wound up with Tahoes. Since I was never a big fan of the Durango as a police vehicle, I never followed through ( or cared) on knowing if discontinued Durango production was indeed the case.

After reading this thread and following up, I went to Dodge dot com and was surprised to see a Durango in the 2011 lineup!

So there you have it....I can admit when I'm wrong about something...but it's not too often that I am, ....at least that's what I tell my wife! :dielaugh:

Can't make something like this for the Ford Expedition because of the lack of maounting area on the on the "D" pillar. The rear glass hatch covers the entire back of the truck, unlike the Chevy/GMC. And there is also no "rear spoiler" on the Fords. The glass is hinged at the top of the hatch.

I work in "Taxatooshits" (Massachusetts), and see many police and fire Expeditions. Most have exterior light bars (marked units), or a light bar (Whelen Dominator) mounted inside the back window. That's why I chose to to the same with my Expedition.

As for the new Dodoge Durango, it basically is using the rear tailagate/hatch from the Fiat/Chrysler minivans.

They're exactly what most people think they are: three LINZ6s and one Vertex per side. There is no controller, as the LINZ6s are four-wire control (just like the regular units) and the flanges are for TIR3/LIN3 heads.

We put both the regular Outer Edge and the Piller version on a 3/4-ton Suburban for an EMS supervisor, and it actually came out really nice:

911 Custom - St. Francis County EMS Vehicle

Take a look at those, I took some really good up-close shots of both sides. And I know people are going to ask: the top Outer Edge is used primarily as a traffic advisor, whereas the Piller is primary rear warning.

I like the concept, but the design wasn't well thought-out. One BIG drawback is that in order to run cabling, you have to literally drill a hole in the pillar itself, unless you're keen on the idea of running it down the outside of the vehicle and in through the gap between the hatch and the D-post. The Vertexes work great for off-axis lighting, but that's about the extent of it; the LINZ6s get more of their light down range directly behind the vehicle (but on the other hand, that's great for highway use).

I wouldn't put it on my truck, but the idea is something to run with.

I have a vid of it in red/blue with 2 duel avengers in the rear window. I'll try to post it later today. I don't like the way it looks, but it's very bright even by day when I took the vid.

there is a H guy on staten island that has it on a black tahoe, but i always see it parked, never responding ,so i cannot take a video.......
