I do not know if the black topped domes were to protect the gears from UV damage, but it definitely helped with getting the reflectors and mirrors to produce a more visible flash in bright sunlight.

I think this Vitalite was mother (doctor) first green beacon in the UK. Early 1980s. Incandescent and the bulb holder upside down? She swapped it out for a prem hazard gyrolaser with multiflash...
